It's not a display. It's in the out of sight areas of the library. It had a purpose at one point, but nobody who works there knows what it's for. I thought perhaps it was used to move coal to the boiler decades ago.

In the main library? If I had to guess, it’s probably for processing and sorting holds and and interlibrary loan books for transport around the system. Like this in NYPL: https://youtu.be/4IOv1O6SULY
They have a massive space in Queens for the entire system. It might actually process all the NYC library systems.

My mother is a recently recently retired librarian; spent most of her career at Parkway Central. She doesn't remember this existing but suggested you reach out to one of the librarians. She also suggested it might be at the Franklin Institute instead of the library.
