Hey! Girlfriend and I are likely moving to Philly early-mid next year. Household income ~250k. We'll also be commuting almost daily to UPenn campus.

We're in our late 20s/will be 30 and want recommendations for places that are fun, safe, not too crazy, ?walkable?, and plenty to do. No idea where to look.

With that income you could honestly live anywhere. Are you thinking suburbs? Downtown? Do you need a parking spot?

When I was a PhD student at UPenn I lived in Fitler Square, which is an amazing neighborhood and an easy 20 minute walk to campus. I now live in Washington Square West (only a few blocks from my dissertation chair ironically). It's a bit quieter, but walkable to restaurants and parks. The #40 bus is a 20 minute ride from here to UPenn and drops off all over campus.

If you haven't yet, definitely try to come out and visit. Philly is a city of neighborhoods. You should definitely come out and explore to get a sense of where you'd like to live.

With that income you can pretty much live anywhere. If you're gonna be on campus a lot and want the option of walking or cycling Graduate Hospital, Fitler, or Rittenhouse would be the best options. Otherwise Queen Village, Society Hill, or Passyunk, all 15-20 minute drives, are other good options.

These are all different versions of yuppie; if that's the vibe you're looking for.

Anyone in Philly on this sub that has also lived in Arlington, VA? Possibly moving from Ballston neighborhood up to Philly and we really like the idea of Manayunk, where we could have a backyard for our dog for the same price as what we pay here for a 1BR apartment. We are wondering how you’d compare the two neighborhoods! Thanks!

Since most recommendations are for center city west of broad, I'll just throw out there that Spruce Hill and Cedar Park in West Philly meet all your criteria as well. Its def more residential but still plenty to do and lots of young families. + its a ten minute walk to Penn

Had a few friends that lived in Arlington and would visit pretty frequently and while it's not 100% overlap, I think it's probably as close of a comparison to Arlington as you'll get in Philly. Manayunk has way less highrises going on (it's basically built on a giant hill) but I think the vibe and atmosphere is probably pretty close.

Crime is definitely not the same everywhere, as it is often presented to be in this sub. Ridge Ave in East Falls is okay. It's much busier along that road than it is further up the hill in EF; further up the hill is much quieter. That being said, I would never in a million years feel unsafe walking there or living there. I like the new coffee shop on Ridge, I love Wissahickon Brewing, and there are a few other neighborhood spots around which I'm sure are pretty good.

Depends on what you guys want for lifestyle. Do you want an apartment, a rowhome, or a detached house with a big backyard? If you want city life, at your price point, I'd recommend either Fitler Square, Rittenhouse, or Spruce Hill/Cedar Park as neighborhoods to look around in. All are safe and full of things to do, the first two being closer to the center of the city, and the third being neighborhoods adjacent to Penn. If you're looking for a walkable town/suburb, I'd recommend Ardmore, Conshohocken, Ambler, or Collingswood, NJ. All are near trains and I find them all to be charming, with things to do.

My wife got a job offer in Philly, so we may have to move. We currently live in a suburb just outside Cleveland where the median household is about 65k, it's a decent city where houses range 130-200k usually. Is there a suburb outside of Philly similar in economy and safety?
