But the organ recital is always a treat! As you did, I always made it a point to walk through Macy's (and Hecht's, and Wanamaker's) to hear it during my many years working in Center City.

The magnificence of the building alone is worth a visit. They dont make them like that anymore.

Fun fact I learned on one of the tours - when they originally rolled out the light show (using real light bulbs), they found they had to upgrade the electrical feeds to the building as it got overloaded with the show. Now with LEDs you can prob run the whole thing on a single outlet lol.

Unlike SEPTA, it's a place in Philadelphia where you want to see a stranger playing with his organ.

When I was a kid, this light show had dancing fountains. That was my favorite part!

Agreed. It lost some of the charm when they turned them off. As much as I love the show and memories of it, I think it's at the point where they should transition to a projector show or some new model display. The Dickens display is also horribly outdated.

It would be petty not to upvote this.

I’m a wedding photographer and I work in the Crystal Tea Room at the top of the Wannamakers/Macy’s fairly often. I know if used to be a restaurant during the department store heyday and I wish I could have seen it.

How can you get up there? Is it open to the public? My grandma used to work in Wanamaker's when she was young, I should have asked her more about wheat it was like.

Nooo I love those creepy ass puppets!

You could probably pretend you’re getting married and they’ll show you around.

The Christmas show starts the day after Thanksgiving, so it appears Macy's agrees with you.

I remember this and the Christmas Carol display. We went when my brother and I were real young. It was magical to me back then.

No, they should never change it or the creepy animatronic dickens! I love both of these things so dearly.

TIL there’s a light show.
And I agree it’s too soon for Christmas. It’s not even Halloween yet.
