Also following this after a porch pirate made off with three pairs of underwear and an ice cube tray.

I’m still annoyed at the fact that they stole my wand ‘massager’ the beginning of covid. I have cameras and they were teens. They were definitely shocked when they opened it I bet 😂

Can we stop using this term? "Porch pirate" sounds like some cute little scoundrel.

These are thieves. They are stealing. Call them what they are.

I prefer "fucking scumbags"

Do delivery people actually bother with putting things in these kinds of boxes? You might be better off just having the package held at a nearby store/amazon locker.

Not Philly specific but my last apt in DC had one and they'd use it maybe half the time. They would put packages on top of it, next to it, and behind it. So if delivery peeps use it, it's great. But don't hold your breath

it really is a 50/50. Some that you show it to and are nice and care do it but if it is a rando person on the route it is straight to front door in front of the bars.

I had one at my old house. In my experience, FedEx, UPS, and USPS used it almost all of the time. Amazon was 50/50 at best.

There's a good one made by Keter that is available at various online retailers. My friend and I both have one. It's great because it has a one way package drop system so the delivery person isn't extra hassled with a code or a lock.

one thing I miss about working in the office was getting packages delivered to my office. Downtown, so we seemed to be on a very efficient route, delivered to a business, so the front desk would hold packages and notify us. It was great.

Theres a good chance that turns you into a larger target. Having a sidewalk mounted box implies disposable income, high-value items being delivered and worthwhile loot inside your home. May be a better route to use the shipping lockers many stores provide.

I have a Clevermade lockbox out front, and it’s pretty decent. I get maybe 60% success with delivery folks using it, Amazon is least consistent with it. The one thing that is mildly concerning is that in order to get the lockbox code in front of the delivery person, I am putting it as line 2 of my home address. Should the delivery person not put it in the box, the lockbox code is sitting on full display on the package

Could you list it as “special instructions” in the order instead of as the second line? Or would it show up anyway

I got one of these from a local company. It was the best option for me in terms of design and usability. The plastic ones always end up looking trashy and the as others of said, the key code boxes don't get used. After having medication and some family photos stolen; we thought it was worth the update.

Buddy of mine has had one of these for ... oh 20 years?

It's solid as a rock, and hasn't rusted.

But it can only fit packages up to a certain size.

Since it's mounted at the street, which is a good 50' walk to the house, most delivery people are glad to save themselves the walk and put things into there.

You might get some schmucks putting trash or other crap in there.

Not a direct answer to your question, but I have to maintain the tradition of somebody posting this on stolen package posts... I love Fishbox and use it even though I don't live especially nearby. It's worth the extra errand for me because I can use the address for even expensive packages (and share it with family for gifts that I'm not expecting or tracking myself). The owner is a young local entrepreneur. https://www.getfishbox.com/

I got a fancy locking outdoor box for my stoopand the delivery people couldn’t even bother to press the latch on top to lock it closed. So don’t get one if you expect them to do one step more than toss it inside. I NEVER had success with giving them the code for multiple deliveries. Hell, one delivery guy walked around my box in the middle of my stoop to set a parcel by my door anyway.

I finally just got a PO Box. Most if not all of the post offices in the city now support direct addressing, so your Box has a street address and the box number looks like an apt number. I get Amazon, fedex, etc all sent to my handy and cheap PO Box! If you buy the smallest one, they just hold your packages at the counter for you. Some even have Amazon-ish lockers for easy pickup with a QR code.

Not going to be a popular opinion but if I can't source something downtown I just buy it from Amazon since it can go to a locker, since even USPS leaves stuff on the stoop. After a month-long UPS investigation chargeback nonsense I just figure it's worth the subscription since they can protect my stuff and the other companies (and the city) can't.

I linked the box below that I installed in 2020, still working out really well. It's metal and looks a little less cheap than the plastic boxes. The box wasn't cheap but it has saved me a few times when I wasn't home to receive packages. u/whomdoneit linked a Bradford box further down that looks REALLY good if you can't / don't want to have a freestanding box.
