I’m horribly worried about my soon to be seven year old. I won’t go into details here, but we had a visit with our pediatrician about his behavioral issues and they offered us a whole lot of nothing. I’m wondering if anyone here has a recommendation for a psychologist or psychiatrist in the Philadelphia area who works with children. I need help for him and I’m willing to pay out of pocket for him. I love him and just want him to be well.

I work in children’s mental health (not a provider) so I’ve witnessed how distressing mental and behavioral issues can be for kids and parents and siblings. Sending lots of warm thoughts your way as you navigate getting your child the help he needs.

I’m not surprised that your pediatrician was dismissive or uninformed, GPs are generally vastly under informed in mental health issues and aren’t always the best in knowing how to handle situations where families come to them.

I second CHOP: https://www.chop.edu/centers-programs/child-and-adolescent-psychiatry-and-behavioral-sciences

Also, just in case you find yourself in a crisis situation, here’s a link to the Children’s Crisis Response Center: https://www.philachildrenscrc.com

Try to get him into Nemours in Delaware. They are absolutely the best for kids’ mental health.

There’s also some more offices in the suburbs you could try that do virtual appointments- MainLine Health I think. Depending on what’s going on Temple also has an anxiety clinic with grad students and could probably get your child in pretty quickly

Have you talked to his school counselor? They often have a lot of resources

About 60% of all schools in Philadelphia public schools will not have a counselor this school year. It's criminal negligence and such a heartbreaker.

Yes, CHOP. They are your best AND SIMPLEST starting point. They have the resources and will connect you.
I am sorry for what your son and you are going through. Trust your gut and keep advocating for your family.

If your child is in crisis you can take him to PATH and get an immediate evaluation. Just check their hours, staff is there but the doctors aren't always past 3:00 or so.

Center for Family Empowerment, Thriveworks, or even Better Help. Personally used Thriveworks and was able to get in quickly. Links below:

Seconding this. Do not use better help especially for a child. You will waste money and lots of time.

You can also call 988 or Philadelphia Crisis Line (215) 685-6440 if you are in need of Mobile Crisis intervention or connection with services. I second CHOP and the Children's CRC.

https://www.childandfamilyarttherapycenter.com/ is another great resource for outpatient therapy that has multiple locations.

We've found the folks at CFATC to be great—and their Philly office is right at Broad and Walnut, which is pretty damn convenient.

Saint Christopher’s children’s hospital provides affordable PCIT which is a very effective intervention for children with behavioral issues. It might be worth looking into
