I got invited to apply for a CHOP social worker position and would love to connect with some folks on here as to what to expect. I would love to work for CHOP and am hopeful but also don't want to get my hopes up. Thanks in advance!

Expect to do a diligent 2 hour interview with a potential patient, tell them that CHOP has no capacity for new patients but tell said patient they should pursue treatment elsewhere, not follow up for 6 weeks, then send a list of other providers would come up in a Google search for “Philadelphia psychiatrists” but spice it up with a few dead links and phone numbers for programs that have been out of business for two years.

Not that we had an experience like that.

Honestly I have no idea how it happened but it did.

I was a social worker at chop for 3 1/2 years. It was my dream job and then I started to work there. The work culture is toxic and abusive. Chop has this mentality of it should be a privilege for you to work for them. You’re replaceable and will treat you that way. The only good thing about it is that it looks good on your resume. My advice, not worth it. Find a different job!

Oh damn, this is the first time I'm hearing of a toxic culture there. Sorry you experienced that and I would truly hope that CHOP would do better. Where did you work there?

In the emergency room and after hours coverage. I’ll give you an example of how bad it was. My boss at one point told us she interviewed a potential new hire and said they were qualified but decided not to because they were too skinny and probably had an eating disorder. She literally said this in front of multiple staff members.

Oh boy. That's super concerning. Definitely a problem system wide. Thanks for sharing!
