I live in a rural area of another state and am visiting family. I've been craving soup dumplings for a long time. Know any spots? Ramen is a bonus but must have soup dumplings.

Don't even order entrees, just pull up with a bottle of something you like and continue eating soup dumplings until you can't eat anymore
drexel_dragoon has this correct. This is the way.
Note that they have a bar now so while you can byob, they have a $15 corkage fee
Which means they're BYOB, but you just gotta pay $15
They used to be BYOB only but apparently had to many college kids coming in getting shitfaced so they have a liquor license now.
I was one of those college kids; my fraternity brothers and I would go there with like 12 people and 3 cases of beer and eat dumplings while getting trashed for hours.
Granted, we knew we were the worst so we'd leave a 50% tip lol

Wow bruh college sounds rad when your parents can afford a 60k a year instate tuition !
Drexel's a private university there's no in state vs out of state
it doesn't cost 60k a year, it costs $16-18k a quarter in tuition, and you only have 12 quarters to pay for over a 5 year program putting the base tuition cost around 200k without financial aid
everyone gets substantial financial aid at Drexel; I got 50% off tuition, so that leaves $100k in tuition
Drexel students get 3 coops in a 5 year program, and I earned an avg $20k each coop, which leaves $40k
FAFSA loans account for a little over $6k a year, and over 5 years I got $31k in FAFSA loans leaving $9 in tuition
I worked as a barback for 3 summers, earning $6k avg each summer covering for total $18k
So I graduated with a net +9k after my time at Drexel, and had paid my parents back completely before I even graduated. But sure, go ahead and tell me about how privileged I am because I liked to have fun with my friends every now and then.
Lol
Idk why you're downvoted. You seemed to be just explaining in case I was new to this term. Thank you
Np, and I think it's because I mentioned in this thread how I use to roll up with my fraternity brothers and lots of beer and we'd get trashed while eating soup dumplings until we couldn't.
We were dickheads, but it was worth it and we always tipped well lol
As long as you weren't too bad, sounds like a great time 😅
Lol we were just a little loud, but nothing egregious enough to come close to being kicked out. Like I said, we always tipped extra to make up for the bigger mess we made from all the cans haha
Definitely some of my better memories
Yes. That is what a corkage fee is

This is the answer. Tom's is good, too, but dim sum garden is the best.
+1 on this

Dim sum garden, Tom’s dim sum, dim sum house are my go to’s
Dim sum noodle has both ramen and Shanghai juicy buns
If you’re in the Northeast or willing to travel there, China Gourmet. It’s not well known with the “dim sum is hip” crowd, but to folks who immigrated here and actually want a real taste of home, that is THE spot.
China Gourmet is exceptional. I actually don't love the dim sum there as much as just ordering off the menu, which you can always do. Lobster is cheap AF and tasty.

Dim Sum Garden or Tom's Dim Sum are my go-tos.
BYO for atmosphere.
Shanghai 1 in Chinatown. Its also BYOB so grab a couple beverages down the street and enjoy.
Bing Bing Dim Sum is my favorite in the city. They have normal soup dumplings but also their cheesesteak bao is fucking amazing.
Also, their happy hour prices are amazing and lasts a few hours.
Idk why someone downvoted this. Bing Bing may be hip and more expensive but the quality is great.
If you're looking for a hipster vibe where you pay more for dumplings and enjoy an overpriced but delicious cocktail, sure. It's just probably not what most people are looking for. They're not an authentic dumpling place where you can gorge yourself on dumplings for a reasonable price. Good, great quality, but not the choice IMO if looking for a good soup dumpling (dim sum garden has 6 varieties!)
People give this place so much shit for "not being authentic" but damn it's delicious. I don't think they ever claimed to be authentic in any way, so let them be delicious, with a good bar and outside seating and stop either complaining or gatekeeping. They do what they do, a little pricey but their own original version and it's enjoyable. Cheesesteak bao bun is great!
Edit: also, great soup dumplings, authentic or not!

And the caterpillar bread!
bing bing is fire

If you are looking for suburbs with parking, Sang Kee in Wynnewood.

Anyone ever try the ones that can get sent to you? It comes with sauces and a steamer pot?
Asian grocery stores in multiple cities I have lived carry “mini soupy pork bun” in the frozen section. Pick up a bag and a bamboo steamer and enjoy! They’re pretty darn good and ready in ~15 minutes.
I have XCJ ones and they are pretty good. Super easy if you have a steamer. Eat them quite a bit. Comes out to like a quarter a soup dumpling so you cant beat that. I have been to shanghai and had them there. None in philly compare though. There are a few in nyc that are pretty close.

Tim’s dim sum is my favorite
Dim sum garden
Ocean City is l think the only place in the city that does traditional dim sum with the carts. And Ocean Harbor is also great. They're the two old school dim sum spots in Chinatown that's still standing and you should definitely patronize them.

The Ground Round
Dan dan
Dan Dan doesn’t have soup dumplings
Are they non soup dumplings? We def got dumplings that came in a liquid. Idk what the nomenclature on that is.
The soup is INSIDE the dumpling 🤯
I never heard of such a thing!!!
Go to dim sum garden immediately!
A soup dumpling is a dumpling that contains soup inside. Think like a gusher, but in the form of a steamed Chinese dumpling
Oh, well thanks for the info. Learn something new everyday. Thanks mate!
They're very delicious! Could not reccomend trying them enough at one of the many dim sum places in the city.
Ah you’re thinking of the pork wontons in chili oil! Not the same but still v good
Hell yeah they nice af
