Biggest mistake people make when visiting the Italian market is not venturing past Washington Ave to the South or Christian to the North. Most of the famous stuff is Between Washington and Christian on 9th, where you will find Dibruno Bros (meats and cheeses), Fantes (kitchen supplies), Talluto’s (pasta and meatballs), Espositos and Cannullis (butchers), Claudio’s (Italian specialities, definitely get the pesto and Ricotta), Anthony Chocolate house (coffee, gelato, chocolate), Villa di Roma (old school red sauce Italian restaurant and bar), and also a Blue Corn (a great Mexican Restaurant with sidewalk dining). On Christian to the east there is Biedermans (cured fish and other jewish delicacies - get the pastrami salmon). To the west on Christian you’ll find Isgros (Italian bakery, best cookies/cake). North of Christian on 9th is Sarcones bakery (Italian bread - makes Philly sandwiches the best), Angelo’s Pizzeria (a new gem with world class steaks, hoagies, chicken cutlet hoagies), also Kalaya (Thai restaurant). To the south of Washington it’s primarily Mexican until you get to Pats and Geno’s. There’s a slew of awesome Mexican restaurants and taquerias but the most famous and raves about is South Philly Barbecoa, if the line is short (or even if it’s long) get it. Past Pats and Geno’s keep walking south on Passyunk and that brings you into The East Passyunk Ave corridor which has tons of restaurants and bars and shops.

If you end up south of Washington, consider Rim Cafe. Crazy good hot chocolate and plenty of other desserts.

Kalaya is closed. They are opening a new spot in Fishtown.

Heard about the Fishtown spot. Didn’t know they closed South Philly. I’ve been away since June
