Everyday in the late afternoon my neighbors' smoke alarm goes off. I know they smoke cigarettes in the house. It takes sometimes 10 minutes for them to shut it off, or open a window. Is there anything I can do?

I'm surprised an indoor smoker let's that happen. Usually they are too lazy to constantly turn it off, so they take the battery out or open the window before smoking. Maybe your neighbor likes games. Or is less intelligent than the average indoor smoker and hasn't figured out how to solve this problem yet.

This seems to be accurate. Games/enjoys harassing people. I am not a fan of the answer "call 911" nor "knock on their door and ask" because this person has harassed me on multiple occasions. When I complain about something the neighbor says, "Time to moved time to move." I simultaneously cannot afford to move not am I willing to talk to this neighbor.

hmmm. that makes it tougher. can't really give advice without knowing the person. i dont blame you for being angry >!nor would i blame you for taking an equivalence in vengeful action or being a dick when the appropriate situations present themselves!< but there is not much i can think of to do. 911 wouldn't come out for a smoke alarm, and neither would the cops >!hence my blacked out suggestion, which could be considered unjust in modernity. and so it may be. but sometimes justice sleeps, and we must stir it awake by ourselves!<. anyways, good luck.

Take up drums. Get a sound system and a newfound enjoyment from death metal. Have multiple gallbladder attacks that last an hour or two each. Seriously, the only suggestion I have is to make noise back.

Knock on their door and talk to them??

No thank you, trying to avoid conflict. They already harass me enough.

Well then I think sucking it up is your best bet. They will know it’s you if you call 911 like others have suggested.

Exactly. I am tired of being harassed and I cannot afford to move. Every threat of violence and street harassment is about sucking it up.

How would they know who called 911? The overwhelming majority of housing in the city is row homes or apartments. The phone call could have come from anyone within hearing distance of the fire alarm.

OP seems to already have issues. Even if the neighbors don’t KNOW it certainly isn’t likely to help the situation and there is nothing the police can do. It’s a fire alarm. They are required in rentals and the police officer isn’t going to knock on the door and tell them it’s annoying. It’s just going to make things worse.

Do they rent or own? If they rent you could try contacting their landlord. Not much help if they own.

I’m assuming that their alarm doesn’t contact the fire dept automatically. You could help them with that by calling 911 every time it goes off. Eventually the fire dept starts charging them for every visit they make.

I'm afraid 911/the City is going to charge me for every call I make. Or my neighbors would harass me even more.

Edit for clarity

…..? That is not something they do

I would feel more comfortable going to the fire station and asking, but thanks for the input.

If you have to call 911 because of a smoke alarm repeatedly going off, they’re not going to charge you for making those calls. That doesn’t make any sense.

You're right. Although this person would just harass me, and threaten me even more. I try to avoid this person, I can't afford to move.
