I went and grabbed a dozen avocados from FDR yesterday. I’m not kidding that every single one was covered in white mold and completely browned on the inside.

Don’t waste your time driving down there and waiting in a 15 minute line. It’s not worth it!!! Hopefully some of y’all got some better avocados than me.

They said the avocados were at all stages of ripeness. They got something like 300-400,000 of them. I can't imagine they looked at all of them. All of the pics I saw looked like good avocados. Not trying to be a dick, just saying maybe don't write off the free avocados entirely.

I got a bag and they were definitely underripe but otherwise good ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I just ran into a colleague holding an avocado and asked if she's gotten it at the park yesterday. She looked at me like I was nuts and said "no, I got it from Whole Foods" and then I had to explain this entire thing so she wouldn't think I was in the habit of foraging trash from parks or something.

What time did you get them? Per this article, mostly moldy ones were left later in the day. And wow, they gave away 300k in less than 3 hours.

>Those who got there past 3 p.m. were met with heartbreak and an overcast sky. There were some moldy avocados left, but volunteers discouraged grabbing those. “I may come back tomorrow,” said South Philly resident Crystal Rose. She found some avocados that were edible — they had some moldy stems but were good on the inside— but she’s hoping to grab more for her breakfast.

I got some as well and they were all very fresh and hard to eat. A little fuzziness on the stems but I wash them all off and they are good to go. Definitely have heard some bad ones around. Definitely hit or miss and I'd say people shouldn't be afraid to say these ones are bad.

if i understand correctly, mexico usually ships avocados to the US but they weren't exporting as many last year so peru stepped in the capture the market.

now peru has a fuckton of excess and can't move them all due to the way grocery contracts work. so they're trying to get rid of them in huge numbers at this point.

The ones I got also have moldy stems. Can I even eat those?

Waiting on the lawsuit, ad said a free avocado for every Philadelphian, apparently not true.
