That and the advice to ā€œstay stillā€ is kinda unsettling

They are using some kind of professional dog catching service and they told the owners to tell the public not to chase, or call his name because he is likely in survival mode and will run.

could trigger something in the dog if he doesn't recognize you

Witness Protection. The mob is trying to kill him for ratting out the boss.

The dog was taken from the parking lot in Wawa on Aramingo. There has to be cameras in that area, his disappearance from the car is just very strange.

What's the point of noting his name if you can't call it?

they hired a professional dog catching service, and this is what they recommended the family to tell the public

Iā€™m a former dog trainer and Iā€™ve also worked with rescues and Iā€™ve seen the videos of this guy, he seems like a very, very sweet dog, and I donā€™t know who these professional dog catchers are, because in all my years of animal welfare, Iā€™ve never heard of such people. Maybe she just hired animal control?

Did you call the police? What did they say? Obvisouly Wawa has cameras that woulda seen the suspect. Easy if they were in a car. But folks NEVER leave your animals in the car alone. If you canā€™t be with them the whole time then leave them at home. Side note. There are GPS trackers you can put on your dog for like $100 a year that connect to the cell network. You can also use AirTags.

Itā€™s not the family is just following some professional dog catchers advice, and they are distraught over the loss of the dog. It appears the dog was taken out of the car at Wawa.

Not fishy! Very real. A-hole took the dog from a car in that Wawa parking lot. Horrible

Emcee_Cone t1_ix7xdiu wrote

Thatā€™s absolutely terrible. I apologize, didnā€™t know the back story. How did they get him? Break in the car? Or did they have the car running with the doors unlocked?

kflan138 t1_ix85t1p wrote

That part wasnā€™t super clear in their post. Originally they thought the dog got out, when they came out of the wawa, their car door was opened. Iā€™m assuming that they mustnā€™t be from around here because that wawa may be the second shittiest/sketchiest one in the city (Behind Aramingo Wawa between Cumberland and Huntington) and I canā€™t imagine even going in, let alone leaving a door unlocked. However, I definitely HAVE had my nervous dog UNLOCK my car doors by stepping on the button, soā€¦who knows.

Anyway, somehow they got PPD (or someone) to HELP THEM get the video from wawa (or somewhere nearby) which showed some people who either stole the dog or let the dog out of the car.

Iā€™m going from memory, but these folks seem super invested in finding their dog. Reminds me of Louie all those years back, that woman never gave up and eventually Louie was found and returned.

Edit: English is my first language, itā€™s just early and Iā€™m not quite coherent yet, sorry for typos and offensive grammatical blunders.

Definitely not fishy, you can trace this whole situation out on Facebook pretty easily. These poor folks want their dog back.
