Interesting to see that Wawa does more in sales than Acme does. (survey removes gasoline sales). Also surprised to see Target (which had its grocery-only sales count) outrank Wegmans

Wawa in 3rd is very impressive. The are beating the national stores handily

I would've assumed the beer/wine at Acme, and the fresh meats/produce would at the very least put them ahead of Wawa.

PS: some of the prepared foods at the supermarkets are decent...I'd happily take a Giant/Acme pre-made hoagie over the travesty that Wawa hoagies have become

It would be interesting to see this just for the city of Philadelphia.

Totally forgot about the beer and wine. Hmm that is interesting.

Agreed about the hoagies. Wawa has gone downhill. But their spicy Italian panini and the chicken salad club is still great.

In my opinion, the Giant near me is one of the worst supermarkets that I have ever been in and Giant is atrocious as a company, overall. There's a Stop-n-Shop about 10 miles further away but it is absolutely worth it, both in price, quality and overall mental well-being. I could go on and on about all the reasons I hate these stores, but most other stores share the same anti-labor, anti-consumer practices. It's just that Giant leans all the way into making their stores extra uninviting.

Surprised Trader Joe's is at number 19. Every time I go in it is packed.

I'm surprised Giant is as high as it is, given that there's not a single location in the listed South Jersey counties.

(Actually I don't even think they have any locations in all of New Jersey.)

_Cocopuffdaddy_ t1_iy94ass wrote

Okay, now let’s convince them to open up some stores with more fresh foods closer to people who practically have none

tigerlotus t1_iy9513p wrote

Also, it's by sales. When I go to TJs and walk out with a couple of bags, it's always like half the price as getting (what seems to be) the same amount at Giant. Not to mention the amount people are buying at a Giant/ShopRite/Walmart vs TJs - I see over-flowing carts for big families at Giant and more conservative hauls at TJs (albeit the selection is more limited).

Where the heck is a Redners? I thought that was like a central PA thing.

Wawa is not on my list of places I'd shop for groceries, they always seemed so expensive.

I’m gonna be honest everyone up here loves Wawa but that shit is mid as hell

The 8th & Market Giant is all-in on self checkout registers. Those things are designed to move people.

ACME's self checkouts are your usual "please place item in bagging area" horror story.

Switched from Giant to Aldi recently. Weekly grocery bill went from ~$155 to ~$70. Kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

Have you ever had their fried chicken? In my opinion, it’s better than a lot of places & they have cheap chicken monday where you can get 8 pieces for 6.99

Every Giant I’ve ever been in has fucking sucked. Slowest-ass deli’s in the world. It’s bull shit that they have a monopoly on Boar’s Head or else I’d never go back.

No one is going to Wawa on a weekly/bi weekly bases to go buy groceries, and if you are you a jabroni Get me a fresh bag a arugula and whole carrots, clove of garlic, oh and don’t forget the eggplant at Wawa. I’ll wait.

It’s a convenience store that sells hot food. It’s not a “grocery store “

Just because you can buy grocery items at some of the stores don’t make them grocery stores.

At least at target you can find a fully grocery sections With “most” produce and dairy options.

I’ll take 3lb of that “fresh” clams from cvs please

This list is trash. And they groups things that should be grouped in this list , like convenience store and pharmacy.

a_pale_horse t1_iy9y4ol wrote

many penn students would disagree about cvs, judging by how many people I see coming out of there with bags full of stuff they could get for half the price within half a mile's walk

Aldi is investing heavily in their US expansion. Another location opening on 21st and Oregon in the next month or two. Imo it beats Trader Joe’s in quality for the price (+ Trader Joe’s isn’t as cheap as it was pre pandemic)

RJ5R t1_iya34jo wrote

Giant has a great combo price for hoagie, chips, and soda. It was $7, then became $8, now it's $9. Still a solid deal. The hoagies themselves are meh, but they at least have taste. What Wawa did with their hoagies is downright shameful. It's straight up cafeteria food

The sales are totals, not per store, and Wegmans only has 9 locations compared to Target's 37. Per store, Wegmans has $77 million vs Target's $23 million. Giant is at $43 and wawa is $7 million per store.

I'm curious, what makes them the worst? I usually get great coupons from them, can always find good stuff with yellow tag clearance, and their prices are generally decent. Not like Aldi or Lidl, but still pretty good.

Wawa sucks ass. I remember when I was young, before they were a huge company, their hoagies were delicious. They had real lunch meat not water injected rubber. Everything they make taste like plastic. It's hard, if not impossible to maintain quality with so many locations. Also sad to see that they are number 3 in food sales...no wonder everybody has cancer.

Probability-Bot t1_iybkmfz wrote

Surprised to see Rite Aide so high especially with recent store closings. Im a Savalot person but i have noticed that lately the stores have been a little more emptier. I think part of the problem is they are slightly more expensive ( more so meats) than Aldis...

Love cheap chicken Monday. This also applied to chicken from the butcher case. I used to get young chickens which were originally $6-$8 for a couple bucks. This was pre pandemic obviously but I’ve seen young chickens for like $10-$12 and on cheap chicken mondays they’re half off I think. Insane deal, super easy to cook (spatchcock ftw) and can feed a single person for 3-4 days

Not really that surprising. This chart is the 'Philadelphia market', not just in the city itself. Giant and Wegmans have pretty much chased Acme out of the suburbs...Philly itself (and NJ) are their real strongholds. A lot more Giant stores and Wawa's in the burbs. If the chart was only looking at Philly, Acme would probably be #2 after ShopRite (just a guess).

datches89 t1_iydf55b wrote

Giant has expanded in Philly these past few years. There are new, full-sized stores on Broad and Spring Garden, the SRT and Race, and on Delaware Ave in South Philly. Including the Heirloom on Market, they have some great locations for big sales
