It seems like just yesterday day someone drove through that wall, scattering all the junkies who were nodding out into the wind. I can only imagine how much VD was spread in those bathrooms.

>“Philly is a great city … with a large dynamic population, lots of young people,” [AHF senior regional director Marlene ]LaLota said. “But, unfortunately, like most big cities, there’s a lot of HIV and STIs [sexually transmitted infections]. We figured there’s enough to go around, even with all the organizations there doing a great job.”
At the former Burger King location, AHF plans a full-service pharmacy, health-care center, and testing laboratory on the second floor. On the first floor will be a thrift store called “Out of The Closet,” which will be part of a successful model AHF has used in 23 other locations to help fund health-care services for those who can’t afford them.

Ok, I was ready to snark on this because this corner is such a shithole, but AHF is a great organization and the Out of the Closet thrift stores are pretty solid. Hopefully they invest in some decent security to keep it from going to shit.

Oh this is exciting. I really like going to thrift stores so I personally can never have enough of them good to see the space going to a good use.

Ffs! The best the city can do for a prime corner property on one of its main streets in its business district if a fucking thrift store and low end health care facility steps away from some of the best hospitals and doctors in the country. Shameful.

fucking finally, it's always such an inconvenience when i have to make 2 separate trips to fill my antiretroviral prescription and to buy someone's dead grandma's 25-year-old coffeemaker. now i can do both in the same place.

$2.9m seems like a good price for such a prominent location. Rip it down and build a condo tower. Probably something they will do in 10 years but a non-profit buying the space means they don’t have to pay property taxes. Scam anyone? I’m sure they will happily sell it to a developer for $4m at any point.

Are you familiar with this organization? I was not, but from my initial research I don’t think it’s bad: https://outofthecloset.org, https://www.aidshealth.org

Thrift stores can be good retail additions, look at Buffalo Exchange and 2nd Street on Chestnut. I have no idea if the $3mill they paid for this location is good or not since I’m not sure what it was listed for, but I don’t see how free healthcare is bad when the other institutions in the city are not (to my knowledge). It’s not like it’s a safe injection site.

To clarify, I promise I’m not blindly endorsing - just don’t see what’s so bad since they are buying the place.

That’ll likely attract some interesting people to an area that’s already struggling with that.

I know I sound like an asshole but it’s true.

Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'til it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot...

As a kid, I used to eat at that BK and watched that turn from a giant hole into a giant multi-level parking lot. Seemed like a giant waste to need something like that on Market St, one of the easiest places to catch transit outbound.

I’ve always gotten blessed by the thrifting gods at the west coast Out of the Closet locations. I will be pleased to add this to my center city shopping destination list. And goodness knows there are a whole lot of decent second hand clothes out there, and a whole lot of people like me who seek them out, so it will be nice to have this as another place to shop for them.

If you want a large population of people that are down on their luck, that corner is a great place to put something. With Patco, Septa, and Giant right there, that's dead in the heart of the market void.

ell0bo t1_j2daxbz wrote

Right there on that block is a minute clinic, Rite aid, and a dentist. If you think of it as healthcare for the less affluent that are still fucking, it makes sense. There's no retail on that side of market anyway, not until really almost 10th now anyway.

Another lot we need to upzone and build some more stuff in. Let this cool organization keep their space and add housing units and offices on top. It just drives me nuts we have these crusty little buildings on one of our main streets
