On the one hand developers have clearly been fucking things up. Nobody should be unable to live in their house because of construction next door.

On the other hand, yet another license. It's very difficult to get anything done in this city unless its by a huge developer with deep pockets. Means more money going to bureaucrats and middlemen and higher housing costs.

Or you could be my landlord who hires unlicensed workers extensively who put literally every fixture in crooked, and almost burn the unit next to me down because someone left a lit cigarette in the house before leaving.

Yeah that was my last apartment. Whole building is a disaster.

On the other hand I'm guessing very few people in the city get the permits they are supposed to for work in their own homes.

I think the issue is that there is 900 fees and permits used for doing a basic building these days. If you are gonna go full ignore mode might as well go the whole way.

The city will never give up revenue but they need to simplfy the process. Take away the 900 fees and just have a way better enforcement division.

Make it easier and cheaper to comply to standards. While having better enforcement and stricter fines.

Like I said though. This city loves finding 1000+ ways to take another buck from you. They will never give it up

The real issue is L&I is and always has been a disaster. Mismanaged, incompetent, lazy and underfunded. But it's easier to pass a law then to actually reform a big bureaucracy like that

New laws are nowhere as important as enforcing in a timely manner the laws you have in the books.

Is it unpermitted basement excavations or builders with permits that are causing the problems? If it's unpermitted work you might have to get inspectors out there on the weekend.
