Or go out to a place that’s open and tip well.

Not everybody is Christian

So me personally going to a restaurant that’s already open is keeping people who don’t want to work there? I don’t get the logic but okay buddy, merry Christmas to you too

Yeah because when you actually work in a restaurant you have to pick in between seeing your family and keeping your job

And how is that my fault exactly? Seems like something they should take up with their employer. I don’t begrudge any place that’s closed today. But if they’re open… how is it my fault that the employees are there just because I chose to go? They’d be there either way.

kxm1234 t1_j1o8gyx wrote

No, the employer wouldn’t be open if the restaurant didn’t make money. Demand creates an incentive to open.

I’d rather an Indian restaurant or jewish/Israeli restaurant shut down for holidays that they want to celebrate than to force Christian culture on everyone. Let businesses operate as they want to. Don’t like it, then quit. Open restaurants today are a minority and the demand for restaurant workers is still there so move if it’s not worth it.

You’re “entitled” to eat as a paying customer wherever is open today bc it’s open and serving food to customers.

You do actually, if I show up to your open restaurant and pay you money

Why isn’t a Hindu allowed to earn some money today? Bc Christians decide the holidays?

The Chinese Jewish Christmas Day meal is a literal tradition.

It is still a tradition in many Jewish families. Tradition doesn’t mean sacred.

That's entirely the owner's greed. I'd argue two things: First, while technically Christmas is a Christian holiday, I believe it's pretty much transcended its religious roots as a generally celebrated holiday. Second,, it doesn't matter what the business is; if you choose to stay open on a holiday or even at weird hours, there will always be people that will find and patronize it. A skateboard repair shop open on Christmas? Somebody will walk in. A framing store open at 4 a.m.? An antiques shop open on Christmas? Same thing.

My personal feeling is that if an owner of a non-essential business wants to stay open on a holiday or at odd hours, that's their right. But I don't believe employees should ever be forced to work in those situations. If enough aren't willing to work or don;t volunteer to, they should close. But don't blame patrons for greedy owners.

Okay cool I’ll stay home today and do my part. Maybe we’ll see the results of my personally staying home next Christmas when every single establishment in the country will be closed!

Not everyone celebrates Christmas and this is great potential revenue for restaurants and people who work there that could use the hours.
I mean, I'm not going to a chain, but definitely would consider a locally owned place.

I don’t know why people are downvoting you. Most people in the United States observe Christmas in some form or another. Most restaurant workers are people who observe Christmas in some form or another. Consumers patronizing restaurants on Christmas cause the owners to want to open, and they will absolutely force employees to work who would otherwise want to spend time with their family or friends.

And people do not tip better on Christmas.

PhillyPanda t1_j1okf28 wrote

If it’s a priority, Work somewhere that doesn’t then. Majority of restaurants are closed. If you’re still there, it’s worth it. But don’t force cultural beliefs on places like Indian restaurants and act like they don’t want the business today.

kxm1234 t1_j1oqi9j wrote

I don’t celebrate Christmas. It’s not forcing anyone’s beliefs onto me that we all get a day off for fucking Christmas. Don’t tell me how I should feel about cultural beliefs being forced upon me. I know what having cultural beliefs shoved down my fucking throat feels like. It doesn’t feel like a day off.

Should we make it illegal for restaurants and businesses to operate on Christian religious holidays? They do that in many countries but I was under the impression America was nonsecular. Times they are a changing

Oh I 100% disagree. I’m very surprised that people want to combine church and state in that way bc that’s not where my personal beliefs fall. That’s disappointing to hear but I guess not surprising given recent views on abortions and what not. I hope we, as a country, never align with religion in that way. I think the Chinese community and the Jewish community having their own tradition is amazing. I hope diversity only encourages more. Happy holidays.

It’s not combining church and state or destroying secularism to give people a fucking day off.

You are if you’re saying it’s illegal to work today in the US bc it’s a Christian holiday

And holy crap, Tons of people work today. It’s not just restaurant workers.

No food, no travel, no hotels/hospitality, no people voluntarily driving Ubers or taxis, no hospital care or doctors, no ems, no fire departments, no nursing care attendants, no people running dialysis centers… I dunno sounds awful to me, all over a Christian holiday? Not into it.

Former sous chef here, yeah restaurant work is rough and working the holidays sucks BUT people have different religious views and a lot of people don't celebrate Christmas. Rather than being mad at the people who don't celebrate Christmas and just want some grub be mad at the shit industry and the owners who force you to work. Organize your staff if you have to but blaming it on customers is pretty weak. Also working Christmas was always better than waking up at 3am to work mother's day brunch and get absolutely fucked all day.

kxm1234 t1_j1odubc wrote

I’m Jewish. I don’t go to restaurants or buy anything, anywhere on Christmas. I’ve worked in the restaurant industry. I’ve seen workers who have been forced to work Christmas and miss important family moments. It’s heartbreaking, and it is the customer’s fault because if they chose to not to go, the restaurant might close.
