There’s also an app that will let you pay using your phone but it’s still in beta.

on my way back home from NYC where I was able to just tap my debit card or use apple pay without needing a metro card at all, should be the standard

I was able to do this in New Orleans several years ago...

A beta app doesn't help my visiting family today. When it functions well, I'll use it.
