they succeed at what they aim to be, a low cost supermarket that provides mostly everything you need. For those that have never been, imagine a bigger Aldi with consistent products, a bakery, and a lot of random crap in the middle of the store. Every time I've been at Lidl, the produce quality seems subpar, but that may just be my local store. Everything else is pretty solid though. Their bakery is pretty awesome as well.

Their produce, especially the white onions, can be sketchy. Dairy can be a problem too. We've learned to treat both like they have a shorter shelf life than most stores.

That's how it's pronounced in the recorded message at Self Checkout. My friends from the UK pronounce it Liddle.

Eh, as someone who has shopped both, I always end up back at Aldi. Lidl does have a pretty extensive selection of meats, but they always seem to be out of stock of the most common other items, or they don't carry it to begin with (like blue cheese crumbles??). Produce, if they have it in stock, seems to be in worse shape than Aldi, and prices overall have gone from pretty good to meh. I tried to shop at the Lidl in Cherry Hill the other day and I ended up just walking out halfway through (I did return my items though)...half the stuff I needed wasn't there and I realized I'd save more if I went to Aldi the next day.

More housing and groceries are a good thing. It's a shame though that this doesn't have more units in it considering it's right on the BSL and the Girard Ave commercial corridor.

Grocery stores almost always require parking on site. Kinda makes sense and as long as it's not a surface lot and too obnoxious to the area I can't complain.

Eh I suppose but it's in the middle of one of the largest cities in the country. All adding parking, especially an underground garage, does is inflate the cost for no reason and cements the city into car dependency

What's shocking is they're not being required to build more spaces.

Been watching the construction of this place for a year; they finished the work on the Amazon store like 4 months ago and its sat empty - meanwhile the apartments are being furnished. Seems like something is up.

Amazon is taking FOREVER to open any of their new grocery stores. They've cancelled some but still have a ton that are under construction.

I highly doubt they are going to open any more anytime soon...the two stores they have in the burbs seem to be doing horribly, but yeah, there are half to nearly finished stores all over the damn place now. What a waste.

But it's definitely not "Aldi's." Not sure why so many people add the "'s."

Honestly, until people have nervous breakdowns trying to keep up with the checkout bagging, you can call it whatever you want, but it's not a real Aldi or Lidl.

This is fantastic. Now all that needs to happen is to tear down the abandoned former McDonald's/BP and the graffiti-covered, burned-out, boarded-up Checkers, convince the KFC to relocate, and built higher on the NE and NW corners, assuming councilmanic/womanic prerogative will allow that.

It is a crime against old (let alone "new") urbanism that Philadelphia runs a 4-track subway line that runs directly to Center City, the Sports Complex, and its largest university (Temple), as well as its de-facto public hospital (also Temple), with stations under drive through fast food restaurants and parking lots.

Arena debate aside, I don't think that area needs or could even support another grocery store at this point. I'm not sure if there's anywhere in the city with more of them in such a small area. There's the new Giant in Fashion District, Mom's Organic Market, Trader Joe's, the markets in Chinatown, and Target within a couple of blocks (in different directions). Not to mention some smaller stores such as VIP Market on Walnut, 2 7/11s, etc.

I meant commercial below residential. Not necessarily a grocery, although I’m sure a Lidl or Aldi would be welcomed. The prices in most of those markets are $$$
