Just got an instagram ad for them and learned it's pronounced "Leedle"

In Germany, sure maybe. Not in the states.

YES YES YES YES. Thank you to whoever posted this. Made my day. Amazon cashless grocery store, GIANT Heirloom and now Lidl which is my favorite market EVER!

More housing and groceries are a good thing. It's a shame though that this doesn't have more units in it considering it's right on the BSL and the Girard Ave commercial corridor.

Something like this would be perfect to replace the Fashion District. Maybe add a few more stories.

Honestly, until people have nervous breakdowns trying to keep up with the checkout bagging, you can call it whatever you want, but it's not a real Aldi or Lidl.
beeps-n-boops t1_j0imxrs wrote
And for the record, it's pronounced LEE-dul. Not LIE-dul.
ColdJay64 OP t1_j0inqwq wrote
I just learned this earlier today, but not sure I can retrain my ignorant American brain tbh

LOL
(It's also ALL-dee, rhymes with faulty, not AL-dee rhyming with... algae, I guess...)

Arena debate aside, I don't think that area needs or could even support another grocery store at this point. I'm not sure if there's anywhere in the city with more of them in such a small area. There's the new Giant in Fashion District, Mom's Organic Market, Trader Joe's, the markets in Chinatown, and Target within a couple of blocks (in different directions). Not to mention some smaller stores such as VIP Market on Walnut, 2 7/11s, etc.
HoagiesDad t1_j0ivfbv wrote
I meant commercial below residential. Not necessarily a grocery, although I’m sure a Lidl or Aldi would be welcomed. The prices in most of those markets are $$$
CasomorphinAddict t1_j0ixcje wrote
This is fantastic. Now all that needs to happen is to tear down the abandoned former McDonald's/BP and the graffiti-covered, burned-out, boarded-up Checkers, convince the KFC to relocate, and built higher on the NE and NW corners, assuming councilmanic/womanic prerogative will allow that.
It is a crime against old (let alone "new") urbanism that Philadelphia runs a 4-track subway line that runs directly to Center City, the Sports Complex, and its largest university (Temple), as well as its de-facto public hospital (also Temple), with stations under drive through fast food restaurants and parking lots.

I hadnt ever been to lidl before I went to college, shit is pretty affordable compared to most grocery stores...this seems like a dub for the city

Where's the Amazon cashless grocery store?
nowtayneicangetinto t1_j0jbaq3 wrote
they succeed at what they aim to be, a low cost supermarket that provides mostly everything you need. For those that have never been, imagine a bigger Aldi with consistent products, a bakery, and a lot of random crap in the middle of the store. Every time I've been at Lidl, the produce quality seems subpar, but that may just be my local store. Everything else is pretty solid though. Their bakery is pretty awesome as well.
Hashslingingslashar t1_j0jbgm1 wrote
It’s literally on top of a BSL stop. The people living here won’t need cars.
TransportationNo5560 t1_j0jh5ys wrote
That's how it's pronounced in the recorded message at Self Checkout. My friends from the UK pronounce it Liddle.
TransportationNo5560 t1_j0jhehq wrote
Their produce, especially the white onions, can be sketchy. Dairy can be a problem too. We've learned to treat both like they have a shorter shelf life than most stores.
Thompson_s_Hunter t1_j0jntn2 wrote

Yeah and I was also shocked it even has parking given its proximity to good transit

Grocery stores almost always require parking on site. Kinda makes sense and as long as it's not a surface lot and too obnoxious to the area I can't complain.

Amazon is taking FOREVER to open any of their new grocery stores. They've cancelled some but still have a ton that are under construction.
rileybgone t1_j0naias wrote
Eh I suppose but it's in the middle of one of the largest cities in the country. All adding parking, especially an underground garage, does is inflate the cost for no reason and cements the city into car dependency
mbz321 t1_j0nroaa wrote
Eh, as someone who has shopped both, I always end up back at Aldi. Lidl does have a pretty extensive selection of meats, but they always seem to be out of stock of the most common other items, or they don't carry it to begin with (like blue cheese crumbles??). Produce, if they have it in stock, seems to be in worse shape than Aldi, and prices overall have gone from pretty good to meh. I tried to shop at the Lidl in Cherry Hill the other day and I ended up just walking out halfway through (I did return my items though)...half the stuff I needed wasn't there and I realized I'd save more if I went to Aldi the next day.
mbz321 t1_j0nrxja wrote
I highly doubt they are going to open any more anytime soon...the two stores they have in the burbs seem to be doing horribly, but yeah, there are half to nearly finished stores all over the damn place now. What a waste.

Shouldn't be shocking, the city zoning code has parking minimums.
What's shocking is they're not being required to build more spaces.
