I took last week and this week off work and I've been a complete slug since.

I figure Wawa pretzels are probably the soft pretzel that people in the Delaware Valley encounter most in their daily goings about. They're far from the best but they are the pretzel that's staring you in the face when you're buying gas, gum, and a Take 5. If you're like me, that's a tough proposition to resist and more often than not, I'm walking out with a pretzel. Once upon a time, I would just scarf that down on the drive to wherever I'm going but now that I'm older and wiser, I toss that pretzel in the microwave oven, add some butter, or mustard, or cream cheese, and I'm having an exponentially better experience.

I'm really getting annoyed with the girl who lives in the unit below me, who started a "dogsitting" business where she just takes random people's dogs, brings them into her apartment, and then fucks off all day leaving the dog to whine, cry, and bark nonstop for hours and hours and hours and hours. This current pooch has been wailing nonstop since 6:30am and sounds like it's being gutted alive while crows pick at its innards. My noise-canceling headphones work fine but....wtf, just take care of the dog.

Sad about Ken Block. SO and I would watch his gymkhana videos together.

Ugh, work. Ugh, foggy moist weather. What a day.

GreatWhiteRapper t1_j2ry22q wrote

She's not like, legit legit. Just a girl in a rented apartment (which has a dog size restriction/pet fee) taking in dogs. There's no website or anything. Occasionally a post on NextDoor.

I'm never good in these situations. I'm debating leaving a note, or just waiting until she shows up and talking to her in person. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and they don't know the dog is noisy but....don't leave other people's dogs unattended for 9 hours a day?

6

typeytypetype t1_j2ryqjd wrote

Can you hit up the landlord? I'm not good with this stuff either, and usually wouldn't think to immediately go over someone's head, but what she's doing is pretty fucked up so I think it's fair to skip the face to face conversation...although it probably won't hurt and would be the more neighborly way to go about it.

7

GreatWhiteRapper t1_j2rzr89 wrote

I could and should do that but...we've already complained to our landlords about a dog before lol. Before this girl moved into the unit below us, there was a girl who lived there who also had a dog and would leave the dog alone from 6:30pm until 8:00am the next morning (she was a night nurse) and that dog would also scream, wail, bark, howl, and cry, for every single second its owner was gone. It was an incredibly anxious dog with mental problems that really needed a yard and some kids, not hours cooped up in an apartment. She eventually did something to the dog to get it to stop when she went to work, but it took at least 3 months.

So I'm worried about annoying our landlords and....I don't know, trying to push us out if we become a nuisance. I'll go the neighborly route and do face-to-face first and hope that sorts it out.

4

typeytypetype t1_j2s08fe wrote

Hope the conversation does the trick, but if not I wouldn't worry about annoying your landlord unless they're some kind of mega-asshole. You staying and paying the rent should be way more important to them than fielding a couple complaints.

Why I'm glad you asked! I made a whole infographic to talk about it.

My top 5 were:

  1. Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Bouey - a YA mystery thriller about a girl trying to crack a meth ring in her hometown. It's really good, and Netflix is making a miniseries out of it. I loved this book, but I struggle with telling people about the plot because it's, y'know, a thriller. I don't want to spoil it, but she really pays off all the subtle hints and threads well.
  2. Meet Me in the Bathroom by Lizzy Goldman - an oral history of the early aughts NYC rock scene - the yeah yeah yeahs, LCD soundsystem, interpol, the strokes, etc. This was my music and it was fun to go back and relive it. There's also a fantastic spotify playlist.
  3. Canyon Dreams by Michael Powell - one season with a HS basketball team on the Navajo nation. Love a good sports "biography" especially the kind that focus on a single season or a unique team.
  4. Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson - two amateur divers discovered an unknown U-Boat off the coast of Cape May. This book was also really, really good - although it made me decide never to go into water deeper than my head lol.
  5. Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe- A book about the Sackler dynasty and the opiod crisis. if there was any justice in the world, every last Sackler would be in jail for what they did.
  6. Honorable Mentions: Eager: The Secret History of Beavers by Ben Goldfarb, Football for a Buck by Jeff Pearlman, Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

My least favorites were

  1. Under the Black Flag by Chris Cordingly - not sure how you can make pirates boring, but he did it. 2.
  2. Why Fish Don't Exist by Lulu Miller - The title caught my eye and I was hooked (pun intended), but the story kind of fizzles and the final third is really more about the author herself, which I was less interested.
  3. Year Book by Seth Rogen - just wasn't that funny, and was pretty short.
3

GreatWhiteRapper t1_j2s1ct5 wrote

Oh now you're just showing off! ha.

I liked Why Fish Don't Exist. I went into it blind, not knowing who David Starr Jordon was. Seemed like a decent fella so I was a bit blindsided by the twist of >!surprise! it's eugenics!!<. But I vaguely remember when it got a little too author-y so I agree with you there.

Shadow Divers sounds interesting and I've heard great (terrible, awful) things about Empire of Pain. I would say I'll pick them up, but I have so many books on my TBR that I'm all booked up (hahaha) this year, literally.

I really want to read American Prometheus. I'm just throwing that out there.

2

electric_ranger t1_j2s2ha7 wrote

3

electric_ranger t1_j2s11m9 wrote

Saving alcohol for special occasions is probably a more sustainable path in the future. It's funny - I managed to not drink up until I met up with some old HS friends last week, and even then it was like "i'm gonna do 1..." and then the next day I said to my wife "I wasn't expecting to go 4 pitchers deep," and she was like "Well it was six, so..."

We'll see how it goes. I don't have any big "drinking" functions until February.

7

familyofgeniuses t1_j2s34qb wrote

You can do it. I haven't binge drunk for years because I get terrible hangovers, but I've still drunk too much (small amounts consistently) for a long time. I'd resolve to stop the frequent drinking all the time and never followed through with it.

But this time around I'm feeling hopeful. I had a few drinks on Christmas and New Years eve, but have been mostly dry besides that for a few weeks. I think the difference this time around is the aforementioned NA beer, because I really do like to crack open a cold one in the evening. And going to the gym. I know it's cliche but working up a sweat really does quiet my constant anxiety that I try to soothe with a drink.

I replied below with an exhaustive list, but if I had to recommend one book it would be Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Bouey. It's a really good thriller.

My average book length was like 340 pages, so that would be like 4-5 days of reading 30 mins before bed. Part of my routine is no phone before I go to sleep, so I spend my last hour before bed reading and journaling.

I also listen to loads of audiobooks when I'm walking or riding or driving.

Cuddling is the optimal position to go for the throat.

First day back, hoping not to be hit by the post-break blues.

I spent a good hour and a half yesterday journaling out my retrospective on last year and outlining goals for this year. That said, I'm determined to take January as a rest month. Not going anywhere or working on projects, just going to do the bare minimum.

The one thing I'm considering breaking my "not going anywhere" rule for is potentially the tattoo convention later this month. Has anyone been there? I'm looking to get my first tattoo done, just a pawprint of my last cat, but I'm not sure how it works, if I can just walk in and find an artist who will do it or what the price ranges are.

Another query for y'all, do we have a decent Indian buffet in the city? The fiancé and I want to eat our weight in butter chicken and naan, and that kind of gluttony is best suited for a buffet.

12

GreatWhiteRapper t1_j2s7ga6 wrote

I've been going to the tattoo convention for years at this point. It's one of the largest of all the Villain Arts conventions and their longest running. It attracts a lot of solid artists.

You pay a ticket price to get in (either one day or a 3-day pass). Don't bring a big bag, large food items, or water bottles. The security team there are huge assholes and will make you toss anything. Small snacks, like granola bars, can get through.

Eat before your tattoo! Eat before your tattoo!!!

It gets stupid hot, loud, and crowded in the convention center. I bring shorts to wear inside. You don't want to overheat.

There will be rows and rows of artists. A lot will have openings. Just walk the aisles and find someone who's style you like. They will tell you the price upfront. It varies between artist how much a piece will cost, so take all the time you need. Some can take you immediately, others might have a few people ahead. Friday/Saturday are the best days, by Sunday most artists will be booked.

Feel free to ask if you got any more questions.

Have you been to the Wildwood one, out of curiosity? Between a friend not being available that weekend for the Philly date, and also being extra careful with my finances in the next few months, I'm thinking I might go to the Wildwood convention in August instead. I would assume same advice applies?

1

GreatWhiteRapper t1_j37k02i wrote

Yeah, once. My SO got something but I couldn't find any designs I liked or any artists that really jumped out at me.

It's sort of the same: security is more lax (idk what it is about the Philly convention but they have the meanest security of any tat convention I've been to). Way less artists. The WW convention center is basically a high school gym. But it's much less intimidating so it might be easier to navigate if it's your first time.

If federal homelessness and drug policies suck, "progressive" local policy on those matters are just gonna result in.... well, anyone can ride on the el or walk around and see for themselves.

Same for taxes. Anyone who thinks income inequality can be addressed by a local tax, when rich people/companies can just move 5 miles away to save the money, is an absolute moron.

I would also add that after 8 years of having a mayor who did exactly that (didn't run the city but just mouthed off platitudes) Nutter would be a welcome remedy. Her husband being a major lawyer at Amerisource is also a little sketchy IMO, especially after the news last week they're being sued by the DOJ over the opioid crisis, which is a major issue in Philly (to put it lightly).

Edit: and to your point about taxes, where did Gym's husbands company recently build their state of the art HQ: Conshohocken because they don't wanna be in the city due to its idiotic tax policy

I'm in the same boat. Her founding a charter school and then making it far harder for charter schools to operate in Philly kind of rubs me the wrong way as well. "Rules for thee, not for me."

I don't see it in the queue, so unless it got removed for editorialized title, I'm not sure what happened to it. Try posting it again?

Unless it's a tweet, because we're no longer allowing tweets/screenshots of tweets as sources, in favor of a full article.

That would be it then. Tweets don’t have enough substance, and then you run into issues with “duplicates” so going forward no tweets or screenshots, articles only.

I am a new renter, so perhaps I just don't know what utilities cost in the city, but my December gas heat bill was almost $300 and I cannot wrap my head around that number. For background, I live in a 700-ish sq. ft. one bedroom in Rittenhouse; I set my thermostat to 69 during the day and 64 in the evening. For half the month I was away at my parents' house for the holidays and had the thermostat set at 62. I just used the PGW compare function on their website and it showed that I'm using significantly more than my block and the entire zip code.

Something has to be up, right? I put in a special meter test request with PGW to check if there may be a leak or somehow a neighbor's meter is tied into my usage, but I'm wondering if I'm just shell-shocked by the reality of city living and this is pretty typical (though the compare function doesn't seem to corroborate that lol)...

Sign up for their budget billing (called Easy Way) immediately.

6

Glystopher t1_j2s75ul wrote

What sucks about budget billing is last time I did that and moved, closing out the account - all of a sudden $650 was due immediately (the amount averaged out not paid yet)

−1

Brahette t1_j2s7cxt wrote

I mean, that's what happens for ANY budget billing. You don't get to not pay what you owe, it's just spread out to lessen the blow.

2

Glystopher t1_j2sicqg wrote

They don’t really warn you and it’s the last thing usually thought of when moving, until you go to set up a new account, moot if you’re moving into an “all bills paid”. I went ahead and let them try to collect until I needed gas again, THEN I paid them, with no help from my former roommates that helped run it up..

Yeah, that can be some serious sticker shock. It's not glamorous, but putting heat wrap over the windows can make a big difference. and buy lots of blankets.

10

_lilkingtrashmouth t1_j2s3aed wrote

I put some foam insulation around the seams of the windows, but that might not be doing enough - it's definitely better, but still drafty. I remember sitting at my kitchen table the one day and the wind was blowing and I could feel it where I was sitting. Went online and bought something immediately lmao

2

SweetJibbaJams t1_j2s3ov7 wrote

Yeah, i'd definitely recommend plastic that will seal around the edges of the window to prevent the drafts.

Phew 2023 already, how the heck did that happen? Hmm what can I report for 2023?

Starting with a weeklong cleanse, then back to keto. I was doing this in the fall and then work blew up and I had to travel all over the place and said to hell with it, I'll get a fresh start in the new year. I was ordering out WAY too much so need to get back to a routine for my sanity.

Upcoming trips! Going back to New Orleans at the end of the month for my cousin's wedding - staying walking distance to Frenchmen and plan on hanging out there and going back to Magazine St during my free time. Will take the list we had back in the summer and knock a few more off it. Then a string of work trips Feb/March - DC, Indianapolis, and a conference. Want to plan a personal DC trip in March/April probably just a long weekend to see my friends and hit some museums (Air and Space has reopened!). The big one is Germany at the end of May/beg of June - friends moved to Kaiserslautern so I'm planning about 10 days out there (free tix thanks to airline miles ftw) and will also do a side trip to Paris maybe. More stuff the second half of the year I'm sure and also expect random work trips to pop up as well, but at least I'm covered for the next 6 months lol.

Had my first good NYE in a long time, and got to spend Sunday meeting up with a long-time online friend for the first time, so it was a 10/10 weekend for me.

2022 was pretty decent to me. Definitely a rebuilding year, but I needed it. Historically my life has imploded in the last quarter of the year every year of my adulthood up until now, so New Year's has been more of a "good riddance" thing for me. It was a bit strange celebrating this weekend and actually feeling hopeful for a change.

Although the roommates and I did forget to make black eyes peas and collards on Sunday so hopefully we didn't jinx anything

I'm not anti-meat consumption by any metric, but I would like to go hunting at some point to at least have a better understanding about where my food comes from and what it would mean to get my own meat.

Any conservationist also knows that large populations of things like deer are horrible for them (from a population standpoint) in the long run due to things like disease. We removed the predators and are now responsible for thinning the herd ourselves.

SweetJibbaJams t1_j2ses38 wrote

For sure. This American Life (i think) did an interesting piece on the guy who was lambasted for doing a rhino hunt a few years ago. The details that were omitted from the general media was that when rhinos get too old, they try to kill younger more virile rhinos and auctioning off the hunt was a way for the local African government to raise conservation funds and take care of this rhino that was a threat to the rest of the endangered population.

Not saying all big game hunting is ethical, but hunting and conservation is an issue that it would benefit more people to be knowledgeable about, in my opinion.

electric_ranger t1_j2s7fjg wrote

That's definitely the same hunt, some of those people are even mentioned in the article.

4

salamanderXIII t1_j2safh2 wrote

Check out AAA's towing benefit at the regular and premium level.

I once bought an older Honda that had been stolen and smashed up a bit. The premium level AAA towing benefit covered it and made the membership fee a real bargain. Just read the policies and work through the logistics/standards very carefully before committing to anything.

I asked some very pointed questions when I did this. I would have been very upset if I has paid the fee and then been declined when requesting the tow-job.

What is the billing period for the utilities? If it's within your "last month" you might be on the hook for the bill. However IANAL, so might be best for you to wait to see if any legal action is actually taken. If so, contact a lawyer.

What's the saying? Do one illegal thing at a time? If you're going to rent out a spot without a license, be the best landlord a tenant can have.

Assuming you're in the city, my understanding is: it was illegal for your landlord to collect rent from you and you are legally entitled to get all eight years of rent back. Get a calculator and decide if it's worth finding a lawyer to sue them (hint: probably yes).

Hi y'all,

Coming up from Baltimore for a day and I'd like to overnight downtown. I've been having some back trouble lately and a nice couple of soaks with a bath bomb would be lovely. Unfortunately, I usually stay at the Notary Hotel and they do not have any rooms with tubs.

Can anyone recommend a hotel that has soaking tub rooms available in that vicinity? I'm not opposed to a suite but I'm not necessarily looking to spend $300+ for a single night.

Appreciate any recommendations you can provide!

Bomber or motorcycle style, nothing too extreme

Nothing too extreme, something that says "Leather Daddy", got it.

I was curious about your question, and i feel like places that specialize in leather are pretty scarce now. Looks like Dude's boutique on south street might be a place to check out.

Other than that, my first instinct would be to check out Macy's or a similar department store.
