I’m aware of PAWS and ACCT but I want to make sure to (try and) look at every possible kitty out there before making a decision (I’ve been waiting to adopt for a VERY long time and am excited to finally go for it). TIA!!
I also got my wonderful kitty Riku from there! Highly recommend, the staff is very friendly and made the whole process easy. My little guy had a lot of health issues early on and they were extremely helpful in helping me navigate through all of that.

Her name at the shelter was Peppermint but I renamed her Tali because I’m a raging Mass Effect fanboy and she had a respiratory infection when I brought her home 😂

Love it! Glad it wasn’t anything major! My oldest boys name is Mika, renamed from Crackers 🤦🏼♀️ and my youngest is Spot! That’s the name he came with and we couldn’t think of anything better. Plus, he has a big spot on his back 😂

That’s how she got me! I wasn’t even there to adopt, just to chill, but this tiny little lady just walked right up and started headbutting my hand and purring, I never stood a chance.

We got our first one here and it was nice to be able to visit them all and get to know them in a relaxed atmosphere before adopting.

How/where do you get that? From Green Street Rescue, specifically? Or like any place that does adoptions?
what I’m saying is that you can visit the cat cafe which normally charges an hourly fee for free to look at the cats if you have an approved foster or adopt application! This is for green street rescue only; I wouldn’t know about others!

Yes, indeed that is the correct interpretation! I highly recommend them. It’s volunteer only, so just be patient with them but everyone is super friendly and wants to help

Don't forget about Morris Animal Refuge!
All the local "rescues" get most of their cats from ACCT so I'd cut out the middleman and go there. You'll definitely be saving a life (or taking a bunch if you keep it outdoors so don't do that).

It was also a super easy process to adopt from ACCT when I did about a decade ago, hopefully still the same. Unlike some of the rescues that assume you're there just to eat cats and investigate you like you're trying to adopt a child.

Just in case you don't know, you can submit an application to ACCT online but they won't view it or do anything with it until you come in to the building in person. They have the online option so that it streamlines the process when you get there, but don't do preapprovals or anything like that. If there's a cat you want, you should go in to meet it ASAP!
Apologies if you know this, but I see a lot of people miss the fine print and get upset when ACCT doesn't get back to them.

Oh, no, in that case either the foster will get in touch with you, or ACCT will give you the foster's email address so that you can email them directly.

Do yourself a favor and adopt a pair. Bonded pairs are the best but not required. Cats tend to keep each other company and tend to adjust more easily. And, frankly, taking care of two isn't much harder than one apart from an extra litter box.

If you don’t mind heading to the suburbs Providence Animal Center in Media is one of the best organizations in the area. They also have a pretty robust vet setup in addition to adoption stuff

I really enjoyed my experience at the Cat Cafe in brewerytown. I got to meet like 20 cats before deciding on the one that fit me. The staff was very helpful and the experience was fun with or without the adoption.
My two boys are from Stray Cat Blues. They are at PetSmart in Montgomeryville on the weekends and most of the cats came from ACCT, PAWS or were rescued from the streets of Philly

Got my sweet little girl from them. She was super shy and they weren't sure she'd get adopted. I was a first time cat owner and they worked with me, even when she had some dental problems within the first week.

I adopted another cat this year and in addition to PAWS and ACCT, Petfinder. Com is a good resource for all of the local rescues (including Green St)
It's a bit of a nuisance you have to fill out an application for each one, but the rescue's work, especially in vetting, is incredibly hard. I did that because cats I was interested in were adopted pretty quickly.
I went to Green St and submitted to several rescues before finding my guy. I also made a donation to the orgs I didn't adopt from. It's expensive for me, but labor-intensive for these volunteer rescues. Some may get cats from ACCT but many support TNR colonies and get an adoptable cat from there.
TL;DR: petfinder. com will list local rescues and be sure to provide a donation to any rescue that works with you.
I had a fantastic experience with One Love Animal Rescue, who are based out of South Jersey but have foster placements all over the area (we picked up our kitten from her family in Delco). They are thorough in their vetting, but it's pretty painless.
Philly Stray Cat Relief Fund (SCRF) has an adoption center of all formerly strays.
Don't forget City Kitties! I used to foster for them when I lived in the city.
Come to south Philly Walmart parking lot near the river with an empty 5gal bucket and take your pic of several dozen cats
If you’re able to go outside the city I would recommend Homeward Bound in Blackwood. They’ve been critically at capacity for quite some time now, and they often have adoption days with reduced fees. A good mix of both seniors and younger cats for your preference. Even a few kittens but i believe they are at foster homes.

Try Philadelphia animal hospital, they usually have ones from hoarding situations that always need loving.
I just rescued a cat last night. Took to Blue Pearl. Very sweet 2-5 month old boy who is hanging in my shower as he heals from a leg fracture and puncture wound. We already have a house full of cats, a dog and kids otherwise I’d take him. Happy to send photos if you DM me. We will be working with a rescue to support him for the rest of his care.
Once I got him home last night, he purred as I scratched his cheeks. Very very sweet. We fostered 3 kittens a few years ago and have had 4 cats and this one is by far the friendliest!
I got two of my cats from Project Meow and they’re great to work with. I highly recommend foster to adopt programs if you have other animals/children to see how they fit in your family
I like adopting cats from a foster affiliated with a rescue. Usually the person fostering can give you some good insight into the cat’s personality. My most recent cat came from ACCT but I’ve also adopted from Forgotten Cats. Being in a shelter is stressful so you may not have a good indication of what a cat is like at home. I have a dog and kids so need to make sure it’s a good match!

Noone was getting back to my mom last fall. We ended up going thru Vorhees Animal Orphanage. They had a Ton of cats and kittens. Ones I don't even think they had on the site.

Le Cat Cafe (Green Street Cat Rescue) in Brewerytown is great, it’s I think a $15 donation and you get to hang out with a whole room full of kitties. It’s where I got my girl from, she was already spayed and vaxxed so it was pretty straightforward for a first time cat dad like myself. Just be sure to bring either a mask or your vaccination card since they were still doing that last I checked.
