I was just wondering if you or anyone you knows speaks Irish? I'm sure there are some, but idk how big of a community there is.

Check out the Irish Center in Mt Airy
Yes, there are quite a few. There's an active Philadelphia Irish speaking group on Facebook (Gaeilgeoiri Philadelphia) and we have meetups at plough of the stars (usually).
Skill ranges from beginner to natives from gaeltacht regions (I'm from co mayo gaeltacht).
Username checks out.
Growing up in the Northeast, a couple of the neighborhood elders spoke Irish. A few kids in my grade school knew some prayers and phrases handed down from their grandparents.
Thank you!
Sounds awesome! I'm just starting out, but hopefully I can build up quickly.
Awesome! Thanks for the info :)
I spek eirish you fookin twat
Edit: slainte
Aye. You’ll find plenty at Black Taxi in Fairmount
Gotta check that out!

i can speak any language you want if you get a couple shots of jameson in me
I live over there but I’ve never been- can anybody tell me what it’s like?
They do events for various local Irish heritage organizations, host various Irish music and dancing events, rent their spaces to anyone who wants to have an event, and have jazz on Thursday nights
Pog ma hon
There used to be a number of Irish in Upper Darby.
That really nice Irish butcher (dude with the ponytail and jet black hair) at cannulis

They also sponsor Philly’s national champion camogie team, as a fun fact
They also did take out during the first couple years of the pandemic and their food was delicious. Wish they would offer it again.
They’re in Havertown now.
They had an outside group running the kitchen, I don't think it will be back
Whet neighborhood and decade? Love it but never heard that.
TIL Philly had a camogie team. Do they have hurling and Gaelic football teams as well?

This was to be expected...
Irish?

you mean Gaelic?
Miss the food so much. It was the same people behind circles and squares / pizza plus / bourbon and branch. During their first iteration they had super solid smash burgers for $5-7 and the pizza was great
Gaelic can refer to a few different languages. Irish gaelic is the specific language spoken in Ireland. Most Irish people just refer to it as Irish or gaeilge (Irish-gaelic for "Irish gaelic").
Yea idk I’m from the Irish catholic community In Philly and I’ve only ever heard it called Gaelic not Irish
We call that part of the pike the Irish Riviera
Most people from Ireland that I know refer to it as Irish. Non-immigrant Irish Americans might be a different story. The linguist community has kind of landed on Irish as well which is why I choose to use it instead of gaelic.

i wonder if its a catholic thing
Can confirm my Irish coworker grew up in upper Darby and they all moved to Havertown
Would you correct someone saying they spoke German and go "you mean Deutsche?" Or "you mean Français?" For French?

I became a member for the food :-(

Día dhuit! Níl mórán Gaeilge agam. Tá mé ag foghlaim. Hopefully you got some more info from this post. Bíodh lá maith agat!
Yup, a national champion hurling team (junior B lol, moving up next year) and a few football teams (Young Ireland, Donegal, Kevin Barry’s). There’s more just outside the city, here’s the full list of Philly GAA teams.
Maybe try the university subreddits as well
That’s so cool! I visited Ireland back in the fall and saw a bunch of kids in Kilkenny hurling, I’d never seen it before so I asked them about it. Thought it was pretty cool and watched clips on YouTube, it’s so intense!

Not a bad thought!
>Do they have hurling and Gaelic football teams as well?
In the burbs too.
>The linguist community has kind of landed on Irish as well which is why I choose to use it instead of gaelic.
You chose wisely.
>Non-immigrant Irish Americans might be a different story.
TIL a fancy way of saying "Plastic Paddies"

There’s also an Irish speaking FB group for Philly. Gaeiligeori Philadelphia
Go raibh maith agat agus go ndéanfaidh mhaith duit!
It’s as intense as you make it, I recommend stopping by a training! Na Toraidhe’s (the Philly team, last time I could make it sessions were coed) are all open, though I don’t think they’ve set a schedule for this year yet lol
Go raibh maith agat!
> TIL a fancy way of saying "plastic paddies"
I was trying to be respectful 😅
Rhymes with book - never heard feck, but maybe that’s a different part of Ireland from where my family is from
I didn't know they made speakers in Ireland.
There are quite a few companies actually!
Also, check out Hibernian Cafe in delco. It's a gem, with genuine Irish cuisine and groceries and a lot of Irish patrons.
Adding it to the list!

I gotcha. I was quoting the Banshees of Inisherin
