I've witnessed pretty much the same thing except no hole, just the wing print interrupting a series of small animal tracks in the snow, and at the point of liftoff there were spatters of blood. It was pretty striking, the still fresh crimson red against purest white of snow. The sense of how recently it had happened and all.

That's because it's not a real owl print it's a snowball crater and a stick drawing of wings.

I don't know alot about nature but I have a small child who loves art and crafts and we have made this exact thing so many times it was easy to recognise. Only instead of an owl it's a "Harry Potter snow Snitch"
