The psychological part of it too. Like a dog that is unleashed but still won’t venture past the length of the rope. We had horses once and when we took down a fence to expand their pasture they wouldn’t go past the line where it once stood. We had to walk them over to it and walk back and forth with them before they finally understood.

My parents were very strict with our dog when we were kids and she was not allowed anywhere other than the finished basement or the kitchen on the main floor. When they weren't home I would try to bring her up to my room and she would dig her heels in like "Nooooo I'm not allowed!!!"
