In Milwaukee, WI in the US, it's a weekly tradition where many restaurants will serve a fried fish dinner with cole slaw, fried potato of one variety or another, and rye bread. I believe it comes from when the city's population was more Catholic.

In my experience, a fish fry is a community dinner/fund raiser where the primary food item is fried fish, but they often have other side dishes and such.
It was common for volunteer fire departments and other community organizations to host them to raise money and provide an opportunity for the neighborhood to come together for a meal.

Winner winner also chicken dinner.I worked at a Knights a Columbus fish fry, especially during Lent. Talk about absolute craziness but they were good times. I was in Chicagoland, so pretty much Milwaukee as well. Atlantic cod with vinegar coleslaw and a big slice of bread from the local bakery.
I'm 45 years old and till this day if I am ever back in my Hometown on a Friday or Saturday, I am stopping off there to eat one of my best friends' Mom's coleslaw. She managed the KoC I worked at with him. Took me over twenty years to get the recipe from them.
