trunk or treat is a new thing. In these events, people park their cars in parking lots and decorate their trunks. Children β€œtrick or treat” by going from car trunk to car trunk rather than going door to door at houses.

I don't know if I would call it "New"... It's been a thing since my son was born over 10 years ago. His first "Trick or Treating" event was a trunk or treat at a church before he was 1 year old and they had already been doing it several years before that.

At minimum, I know the Mormons were doing this back in the late 90's. I went to one.
