The German national team wanted to do a protest against the human rights violations and oppression of the LGB+ community and other reasons in Qatar. The captain was going tocwear an arm band .but FIFA being the corrupt bunch of nob jockeys that they are. Threatened any team with sanctions if they did this. So during the Mational team photo they put their hands over their mouths as a protest at being gagged.

Supposedly they're calling out Germany for hypocrisy since Mesut Ozil (the player) said the German Federation and fans of discriminating him for having Turkish roots back in 2018 when he retired from international football.
Spinxington t1_iy9biai wrote
Fair enough, kinda loses its impact when you remember the german football fed or the fans didn't jail or execute Ozil for being Turkish.

Ozil talked about the genocide on muslims in China & was never to be seen again

Loses impact even further when one of the players covering his mouth, Gundongan, is also of Turkish descent.
Spinxington t1_iy9hy8a wrote
Yeah, unless Gundongan also comes out as being discriminated against by germans FFA and fans.
I did do a quick read on the situation with Ozil and it seems to mostly started due to him meeting with the Turkish President who doesn't have the best reputation and the media used this as an excuse to stir shit as they like to do.

As explained below germany's national team protested for their "freedom of speech"

Meanwhile they wasnt that tolerent when Ozil (The guy on the picture , which is "german" with turkish root )took a picture with Ordugan and same when he talked about Uguours' Genocide in China . So muslims there protested

Gundongan also took pictures with the Turkish President around the same time and was called out for it as well, Ozil got the brunt of it because he was a star player that had been (and continued) to underperform at both club and national level.
