I thought all angus we’re black haired, guess not

Angus cattle can be black or red. Red’s a recessive gene in the breed. The vast majority here in Ireland are black, but reds are getting somewhat more popular. There’s no difference aside from the hair/skin colour. I prefer the reds because they’re nicer to look at.

A lot of breeds that can be black can also be red, like friesians, highlands, droimeann, etc. But there’s other ones that are only red, because red to red only breeds red (while black to black can breed red if they’re both carriers of the red gene)

In the US (maybe elsewhere too?) the reds and blacks are registered as different breeds but that’s stupid. It was just started for the sake of “breed uniformity”

I think they are, I grew up in rural Texas round cotton/wheat fields and cattle fields. You usually see the blank angus mixed in with hereford brown and white cows. Texas is supposedly famous for longhorn cattle but never saw one til I was 30.

Why two tags? The numbers are the same.

Modern-Moo OP t1_j1wio60 wrote

The yellow ones takes a flesh sample when equipped, that’s tested for disease in a lab. The sample is tiny.

The white one is an electronic tag, able to be scanned by a vet (I assume some other officials too) for relevant information on the animal, like their breed, date of birth, etc.

Having two is good in case one of them is pulled off of the ear, so it can be replaced. Also they’re easier to read that way, seeing as there’s a tag on both sides of the head. All cattle in the EU have to have 2 tags (if they lose one it’s fine, just should be replaced pretty quickly)

I wish more of our meat industry had cows raised in healthy, livable conditions. It is a bit grim to see an animal that will one day become food, but knowing that it will be treated with dignity and care before then is at least something.

Modern-Moo OP t1_j1yn05l wrote

I think that most do. At least here (ireland), anyway

Oh that’s nice to hear. In the US, most beef comes from awful factory farms 😖

Well, she’s doing fine as is! Not that I interact with her much anyway, I’ve got much more important things .. such as petting those who enjoy it!!! 😁

Maybe someone ought to tag both your ears and breed you against your will. Then you might think differently about whether she’s doing just fine.

2

Modern-Moo OP t1_j1zrypl wrote

Well, aside from being legal requirements, the tags are pretty much painless! Kind of like earrings, except actually useful. You’re going to have to complain to whatever bull she’s with when old enough about any issues with breeding you may have. Although, between you and me, I don’t think that he’ll listen.. She’s happy and healthy as is, so I do think that she’s doing fine 😁

Shackles on slaves were a legal requirement and pretty much painless, too. You sound stupid.

Modern-Moo OP t1_j1ztpc6 wrote

Bit of a jump there, to be honest! Tags are pretty much painless, prevent disease spread, and help with ID (across the entire EU - that also helps with disease spread), I am not sure what you’re issue with them is? You sound like you’re having a bad day! You should brighten up a bit - check out r/wholesome or r/awww maybe, there could be something nice there! Genuinely, being so negative can’t be good for you mentally. I don’t think it’s good for anyone. It definitely wasn’t for me, anyway. All that matters is that the calf is happy and healthy, and she is! 😊

My issue is with the overall exploitation of the animals. Oh she’s happy and healthy until she’s raped, babies taken from her, and then slaughtered. Aww. How wholesome. Keep your head in the clouds and everything is just rosy.

Modern-Moo OP t1_j1zveu5 wrote

So it’s good that that topic isn’t relevant here! Please complain to whatever bull she is with about any issues with reproduction! Bulls aren’t the best listeners though. Perhaps you could bribe him with a bucket of ration.. or another bulling heifer.. as long as she can healthily raise and wants to raise them, she’s going to raise her calves! Sometimes s##t happens where they cannot or will not, but that isn’t too common with anguses compared to the likes of a friesian. Can’t say if she will be used for food eventually, either way it’d be after a long/easy life if so! Not sure what you mean by head in the clouds, but if caring for my mental health is that.. happily! :3

Oh. So you’re one of those happy humane farms that I keep hearing about. You say exploitation is not relevant here but that’s exactly what you are doing: breeding something into existence for your own profit. But your head is so far in the clouds thinking you’re a good person that you can’t see it. Fuck off and stop taking what isn’t yours.

Modern-Moo OP t1_j1zxvru wrote

I am actually a human, not a business! I do think you are overestimating mainly my age but also how much I own. I haven’t made a profit from cattle in my life, seriously! Not a single brown cent. I do say that it’s irrelevant, because it is! They’re happy, they’re healthy, you’re the only one of the lot with an issue !! You need to brighten up a bit - go outside for a walk, maybe? Listen to a good song.. draw something.. that sort of stuff is usually good for the head, I find. I hope you enjoy a wonderful, lovely day! 💞😊

gordita_brunch t1_j1zz5g3 wrote

I don’t care how old you are. You are raising cows for milk and food. That’s exploitation.

2

Modern-Moo OP t1_j200ged wrote

That’s fine! I was moreso saying that as you’re under the impression that I make money. And under the impression that I raise them. Milk??! Lol, unfortunately not! Raising angus (and herefords… especially herefords) for milk would be like a beef farmer breeding miniature jerseys for beef! Sure, it’s technically possible, but it wouldn’t pay you to turn the milking parlour on. Fortunately, they aren’t exploited! Honestly, I don’t think I’ll respond to you from here on - you’re too negative! I’ve also got a Pokemon game to play. I hope you brighten up soon! Great days to you, I hope! x 😁

Yeah she’s cute. Doesn’t let me pet her but she looks nice. She should be a breeding cow, but maybe she will after that ..
