Are trying to show me that the wage is low or that chips and soda are exceedingly expensive in iran?

tireddoomguard OP t1_j6eeog0 wrote

Kinda both of them... Cause meanwhile these two cost only 50 cents in USD but yet still it's sometimes too expensive for people cause the wages and whole economy is fucked up

Rahnzan t1_j6hzb2r wrote

For americans, it'd be 2 dollars on the left, 5 and a half dollars on the right. Still an hour of pay.

Well to be honest that wasn't a good representation. For instance, a 60 dollar boardgame if imported from amazon or some other website costs 20 million tomans or 200 rials which is almost 4 times an average salary.

Other examples, a video game if bought digitally costs almost a month's salary. Laptops and phones are expensive, Iphone 14 is sold at a price over 1700 dollars and it can't even support Iranian sim cards due the ban on luxury items. A mediocre second hand laptop with core i3 and some basic functions is sold as almost an average month's salary.

I could say meat in Iran is expensive and it could be the same in america, but a months salary in Iran is kinda lower or equal to a months rent in average parts of the big cities. Imagine that family of 3, would need to pay house bills, pay for food, school, laptop for the student (in the covid phones and laptop where a must and they were super expensive due to the Rial to Dollar exchange in imports), etc and they are left with nothing but loans and loans from banks.

The loans are an awful thing as well, imagine you have to pay almost 20% or even higher rate, more money to the bank for the loans they give. So basically the economy is in shambles and import goods are as high a months salary.

So, maybe $3.50 US?

8

tireddoomguard OP t1_j6edys5 wrote

Well no... These two cost 23000 tomans And every one USD is 45000 tomans right now So that would be approximately 50 cents

Anonymoustard t1_j6elkre wrote

Cool, I meant if you bought it in the US.

KistRain t1_j6hq4df wrote

If bought in my area of the U.S. that would be $2 for the chips and $2.25 for the soda, plus tax. So a little over half an hours work at min wage.

barzamsr t1_j6hbm0l wrote

The united states federal minimum wage is $7.25.

2

biggKIDD0 t1_j6hztyc wrote

so it's 50$ per 7hr or 600$ a month, 7.2k per year and just with only 3 days of working in a week, for a total of 84hr in a month meanwhile a full-time worker in iran who works more 9 to 5 makes 74 dollar in a Month, or 3$/hr. less than what a inexperienced young man in the west makes in a single day with the part time jobs.

not to mention no insurance no care from boss or gov support, high risk of fatal incidents, terrible work place, and no additional benefits or even retirement; all this in a country which has more than 10% of world oil and gas reserves and 1% of it's population and lots of minerals, good geographical position and access to free waters the persian gulf and caspian sea with an educated young generation and a supportive old one. absolutely logical...

MaritOn88 t1_j6hmx5i wrote

thats 50 cents though is hourly pay 50 cents in canada?

KistRain t1_j6hqktd wrote

But in Canada you can't get those items for 50c. Which is why the conversion rate thing is a bad way of comparing living quality. It's probably close to $5-6 for that in Canada, like in the U.S and min wage is around $7.50. So, you both work an hour to earn enough in your own country for a junk food snack. Which, sucks. It should be like 15m tops for enough money for a soda and chips.

doctorsilvana t1_j6irkhn wrote

Well let's consider the imported goods in Iran, like phones, laptops, most basic ingredients for home furniture, and other goods.

An average family of 3, needs savings, laptop or at least a phone (due to covid and the aftermath of the revolution, many classes are still held online) for studying, paying bills, paying loan bills (because no one can support their family with the wages alone), and many more necessary expenses leaves many families in debt.

The poverty line in Iran is almost 4,5 times the average salary. And I do mean average not minimum wage.
