My wife and I recently had a baby at Magee... the care we received was mediocre, but that may have also been due to the fact that we were a last minute transfer. Anyways, we finally got our baby's birth certificate in the mail and the father isn't named. I obsessively save copies of everything, so I went back and looked at the application we filled out in the hospital for the record and the father's name is spelled out as clear as day... that means someone at Magee likely didn't put that into the computer and send it off to Harrisburg like they should have.

Having the birth record and certificate amended to add a parent is a huge pain the the butt and quite the expense if proof documents of the parents are required to be ordered from other states.

Welcome to UPMC, how can we screw up you medical records today?

“Life changing medicine” doesn’t necessarily mean good things.

That’s really common and exactly why you have 6 months to make any corrections.

I just wanted to point out that because many people aren’t aware we have a Midwife Center in Pittsburgh that gives amazing care to anyone that does not want to birth in a hospital. Thousands of dollars cheaper at the center too!

Yeah, but also sooooooo many people who plan to have their baby(ies) at The Midwife Ctr end up having them at Magee anyway. I know quite a few women who that happened to, and one who wasn't able to get the nitrous because there were too many women in labor at the facility and they ran out of tanks 🤷

I mean if it’s medically necessary to be at a hospital, that’s understandable. I gave birth at the center and most people I tell, never knew it was an option. Even my PCP had no idea there was a birthing center in the city.

Sure. If your water doesn't fully break and/or you're in labor for too long, or any other complications, they send you to Magee.

They were where we were transferred from. Their care is amazing, both during and after pregnancy. However everything has to be perfect for L&D to be done in-house.

Yes! That's pretty much exactly what I've heard. Great care, worthwhile, but a majority of patients won't give birth there in the end. If you can swing it financially, I think it's worth hiring a doula and planning to have the actual birth at Magee.

This actually might not have been Magee’s fault, if the form you have was right. PA messed up my son’s BC (typos in both my name and my husband’s name). Magee had sent the correct info, someone in Harrisburg screwed up. If you need to file an amendment to get it fixed, (1) DO IT NOW it’s much faster the younger the baby is, (2) make sure to check the state’s website for CURRENT forms and requirements to correct a BC. I made the mistake of following the instructions on the back of the BC I had and apparently that was totally wrong, and would have taken almost a year to resolve because it was wrong (only 8 months if I’d gotten it right! 😭). I actually ended up contacting my state house rep’s office and they got on the phone with the health department to get it sorted. And (3) this one is obvious in retrospect, but order copies of the wrong BC first in case you need it in the meantime (and in case it takes months and months to get corrected). You have to send the wrong one in. Oh also, when they correct it they don’t send a new one automatically, you have to order/pay for a new copy.

Needless to say, I don’t have a very high opinion of the DOH or Dept of Vital Records….the staff in Dan Frankel’s office were great, though!

Sounds like we're in for a rodeo. Thanks for the info. The father to be added needs to send in their BC as well. Will they get that back?

I feel you. We didn't have any issues in L&D. The lady that took the info for the birth certificate gave my husband and I issues because our son has my last name instead of my husband's. Don't even get me started on the lack of communication in the NICU. We were told 3 different times when we could bring him home, if something happened to him while we weren't there we weren't notified and didn't find out until next day before we left or days later.

A year ago the ‘intern’ didn’t file them properly for 8 weeks. Couldn’t get into daycare, couldn’t update insurance, all kinds of headaches… and no accountability.

UPMC is frustrating. Magee did the same to us for one of my kids, and don’t even get me started on how they treated us during our most recent stay

From what I hear, all of the staff is under pressure from the administrators to get patients out the door as fast as possible

You don't say?

My brother and SIL (married) both work for UPMC. After their first child was born at Magee, my brother said something about how he couldn't believe how he had no problem being named as the father on the birth certificate. It sounded so weird to me - why would he think that would be difficult or complicated? I guess he had inside info that it doesn't always go smoothly there!

Did you fill out the "acknowledgement of paternity" in addition to the form for the birth certificate? If I recall correctly, one is for the mother to fill out but then the dad has to fill out something separate. Though this may only be for unmarried parents.

And FWIW, I gave birth at Magee three times. First, care was horrible. Second, care was amazing (though baby was immediately transferred to children's, so maybe that's why they were so nice?). Third was mediocre, but at that time I guess they figured I was a seasoned pro 😄

I will always complain about magee l&d and the whole pregnancy via magee. If I had a choice I WOULD NEVER GO THERE. Terrible experience! Voiced my complaints and since then have met so many people who had the same experience.

They also messed up my daughters birth certificate

Good luck. We had our son at Magee. Our kids birth certificate was incorrect and we’ve paid the $20 to have it corrected twice. Sent back incorrectly both times. Born in 2019 and still to this day not correct.

If your not married there is an additional form you need to fill out. I forgot about it and my sons father was left off the birth certificate. They did tell me at the hospital I had to send it in just with a newborn I completely forgot.

Contact the Dept of Health if you think it's a serious enough complaint.
