You're options are, get a dumpster from one of the hauler companies (Michael bros etc), take it to a transfer station (cheaper than the landfill), or take it to a landfill. The landfills don't always allow private people up on the main dumping area but may have a container by the scale house.

why 3 upvotes? There are free recycle drop offs in Pittsburgh. Why would you pay for a dumpster for some broken down cardboard boxes?

Because they mention trash also. Yes for the cardboard your township or borough are supposed to have drop boxes available for recyclables. Some localities are still refusing to do it. Also all landfills and transfer stations should have recycling bins at the entrance.
