Does anybody have any experience taking stuff to recycling centers or “the dump”? When you just have too much trash for curbside, I’ve always wondered if there’s somewhere I can just take it directly like a “public dumpster.”

I live in the south hills, but really sometimes I’d drive anywhere to get rid of the crap before garbage day.

Spread it out over several weeks for curbside pickup or ask your neighbors if you can put some out with theirs

You're options are, get a dumpster from one of the hauler companies (Michael bros etc), take it to a transfer station (cheaper than the landfill), or take it to a landfill. The landfills don't always allow private people up on the main dumping area but may have a container by the scale house.

You can take the boxes to a city of Pittsburgh recycle center. Supposedly it's forcity residents only but the one at the strip and at construction junction is unattended. More prob are.

Your boro may have a cardboard recycling dumpster somewhere too.

How much extra you talking about. An extra bag or two just put next to the Jin and they will take it. Break down the cardboard and all your recycling as much as possible. What doesn’t fit in your container wrap up with twine and they should take it. I’ve never had a problem with a little extra garbage next to the containers

Construction Junction is where I go about once a month. Look at https://pittsburghpa.gov/dpw/drop-off for your closest.

Please also note: Appliance Warehouse on 6th Street in the South Side takes styrofoam blocks (no peanuts or food containers). Keep that crap out of landfill and waterways. They recycle it into polystyrene for consumer products.

Knoxville drop off center off of Bausman. Recycling but not trash. Has weird hours now because people were dumping lots of trash there but I take cardboard there when I have a ton of it

Because they mention trash also. Yes for the cardboard your township or borough are supposed to have drop boxes available for recyclables. Some localities are still refusing to do it. Also all landfills and transfer stations should have recycling bins at the entrance.
