Oh I don’t know, I haven’t been back in 13 years… but I also know there’s been a constant push to try since the 90’s.

There was some kind of food 4 less or save a lot or something like that on the hill, but it was shut down before the pandemic. I think the closest actual grocery store would be either Oakland or south side. And south side isn't what it used to be

Right on. I always assumed the N. Side Giant Eagle was the downtown grocery support.

There was a nice Shop N Save in the Hill District, built at a cost of $8 million. It closed in 2019 due to shoplifting, crime and the general negative effects of locating a nice store in a hostile neighborhood.

Salem’s is planning to open a store at that site sometime this year.

The article says the owner of the property did not pay the property taxes. The leaseholder (SnS owner)was paying the rent as agreed, which includes the property taxes. It was the landlord who never sent the tax payments in.
I’m guessing this enabled the tenant to get out of the lease. If they really wanted to keep the store open they could have worked something out with the landlord.

Ok, so it was a Shop and Save. That's what I was referring to but for some reason though it was a discount grocery
