A general roundup of queries on businesses that may be coming back, changing hands, opening, etc. in the Penn Ave arts district. Feel free to add more inquiries in the comments.

  • I recently heard that Graveyard Grille is coming back. A local bartender said this, so it's probably rooted in truth, but does anyone have further details (ie same or new owner, same or new concept, anything about the timeline)?
  • Any updates on the timeline/progress for Slanted and Enchanted?
  • Any updates on the timeline/progress for Mary's?
  • Anyone know anything at all about the plans, timeline, etc for the property next to People's Grocery that has a liquor license application for Pabla Brothers (same owners as People's Grocery and People's Indian)?

Mary’s currently has a work stoppage sign on their door because the city mistakenly issued a permit. So probably not opening soon.

They turned Pavement's first (and arguably best) album into a store?

Not the info you are looking for, but there are a few articles floating around about the Pittsburgh Glass Center's soon to break ground expansion. The facility on Penn Ave is being expanded over top of their surface parking lot and going from 15k to 26k sq ft. They are also creating gallery space and visiting artist apartments in a separate building on Penn.

The gallery will be in the graffiti covered building across Penn from Spork. Or in Pittsburgh terms, where the Horoscope lounge was. Ya know, across from where the Quiet Storm used to be.

People’s is expanding their convenience store to include a “restaurant”. Or least close enough to a restaurant to get a beer license.

I thought I read, probably a rumor but maybe someone else heard this too, that Sharon Needles had bought the Graveyard Grill in addition to Mary’s. Again probably a rumor but it fits her spooky brand of drag and she used to drive a hearse. Personally I’d like to see the graveyard grille stay as is, local dive bar like the cage or gooskies.

Also I think mixtape is coming back. Based off an Instagram teaser awhile back.

Np! It's actually what inspired the thread - Mixtape had already been fully reopen for two weeks before I found out, and that's after a couple weeks of soft opening events too.

The ugly building that is all new but made to look old! I hate that thing! They finally got the dumpster out of the road and I did a double take the last time I drove through. Like, "Look at this wide ass road we've had all this time!".

FWIW I think he's more of a minor financial backer than a co-owner.

"Under the ownership of operations manager Grace Emmerling and her partner, local DJ Jeff VanFossan"

"Emmerling says they turned to family members and out-of-state investors – who she calls “minority shareholders" – to help them buy the property. However, Emmerling stresses that she and VanFossan are in total control of the operations."

and I think one or both of the actual co-owners are vegan, because Mixtape is sticking to vegan options and last time I visited Slanted & Enchanted during a First Friday, someone there told me it's going to include a vegan restaurant.

That's a relief. I was disappointed to see the post of him with the owners, but that all makes me feel a bit less icky about spending my money there. Thanks for sharing that!
