I don't see anything specific for Giant Eagle on Reddit, but since it's a Pittsburgh thing I'll try here.

I went to a GetGo for gas. I used my Perks and used a gift card. I didn't save the extra 30 cents with Advantage Pay because I didn't actually use the card to pay for anything. 🙄

Maybe someone has experienced this, but if I would have put, say, $1 over top of my transaction, would I have saved the 30 cents for the whole transaction or would the pump really only discount that $1? It's only $2.40 that I lost, but that's still $2.40.

Let me know, Thanks! 😊

If you use Advantage Pay it will pay for all of the gas, and apply the 30c (or whatever the current discount is) to all of the gallons.

I think that answers the question.

Isn’t it tied to your bank account? Hence if you didn’t use it, how would you get the discount?

So I would test your theory and let us know how it works

The cashier's at geagle told me I have to go online to register my advantage card to claim my gas points. Still works for store purchases, but not gas unless registered.

Edit. Oh yeah, you need to scan your advantage card prior to pumping. Screen should prompt you?

I prepaid $25 and $4 in perks. I didn't save the 30 cents because I didn't use the card to pay for any of it. I'm just wondering if I would have put a $1 on there and used Advantage Pay if it would take off the 30 cents for just that 1 gallon or the whole thing.

I prepaid. So it stopped before I could use Advantage Pay, but I just wanted to know if anyone else experienced this. Like I would have put $1 on it with Advantage Pay if it would have taken the 30 cents off the whole thing. I just didn't think about doing that at the time.

Do you mean put $1 on the gift card and the rest on Advantage pay?

I usually pay at the pump so I’m not sure. if you use Advantage Pay at the pump, it asks you if you want to use Advantage Pay. If you say yes, it takes the 30c off and you don’t get the option to add another payment type. Not sure if that is the case for prepaid.

If you want to max your savings, use the gift card for other stuff and Advantage pay for gas

You only get the discount if you use your linked account to pay for the gas.

It’s based on the linked account, not just the card.

I bought the gift card because I needed gas and didn't have money for it. I used points. And no. The exact opposite. I have Advantage Pay and my card was scanned. I just want to know if I would have prepaid that $29 and used $1 with Advantage Pay to make it $30, if the whole transaction would have been 30 cents off.

That's the question I'm trying to ask. If I prepaid $29 with the gift card and the Perks and I added $1 to that same transaction using Advantage Pay, would I have received the discount off of the whole transaction or literally only that $1 I used with Advantage Pay.

I'm pretty sure that Advantage Pay is "all or none". So you either pay for all the gas with Advantage Pay or none of it, because if I remember correctly once you with something else, they don't ask if you want put some of it on Advantage Pay.
Maybe try next time ask the cashier if that can be done.

Don’t use your points on gas. It goes a longer way on groceries

If it ever happens again, I'll pay over what I have and say I want to use Advantage Pay and just refuse another payment type. If they say I can't do that, then that's it. But I told the attendant what my intentions were. The math didn't add up. She called someone after the fact and I left confused. Lol.

Then I don't understand the "it stopped before I could use advantage pay". You're not doing something right.

To use advantage pay hit "yes" on the pump, scan your advantage card, put in your pin, and it works. That assumes you signed up for advantage pay.

If you prepay inside then you're not using advantage pay, which is linked to your checking account and is done at the pump.

Aggravating_Foot_528 t1_ja4f5jw wrote

No. It's linked to your checking account for advantage pay. You need to sign up an advance for this and give her a third party or checking account which is the one that actually does the payments for advantage pay. Then when you want to pay you have to do it at the pump by putting in your pin.

There's no discount just for using the Giant Eagle card anymore like there used to be

You can prepay inside using Advantage Pay.

From what I understand OP only had a couple bucks in his bank account that’s linked up his Advantage Pay. So he paid with a gift card. The question is if he added another dollars worth and paid that dollar on Advantage Pay, would he get the 30 cent discount applied to all the gas?

Aggravating_Foot_528 t1_ja4qcte wrote

No. If it's a 30 cent advantage pay discount then it's just on the advantage pay part. You can't use advantage pay with multiple payment methods. You'd need a 2nd transaction for any other payment method.

Also the getgo by me only has a 15 cent advantage pay discount. I be surprised if it's 30 cents anywhere though the person may be getting confused with the 30 cents off of gas through fuel perks. GetGo seems to make their advantage pay discount comparable to a 4% credit card, gas money back type offer.

You're correct. I was just trying to reframe the question as posed by OP.

I stated in other comments that I'm pretty sure Advantage Pay has to cover the entire purchase.

I've seen 25c discounts for advantage pay. I suspect they are using that as a type of loss leader to get people to sign up. Because ~15 cents would probably be the break even.

When I initially signed up they did give an additional 30c off per gallon for, I think it was a month.
