Jerry's
Attic for the new stuff, Jerry's for used.
Jerry's is the only correct answer
The attic in millvale is the best. I like the government center too which is nearby so you could hit both of them.
Since OP is looking for Punk and Metal Jerry’s is def not the place. The Attic would be the best — they have a dedicated punk and metal section in the back. New used stuff is right when you walk in the door, make sure you browse that stuff too /u/spencergar. Tell Tony I said hi.
If you’re able to you can also hit up the Government Center which is close to town and not far from the Attic. Also Get Hip is pretty close (I haven’t been there in a minute though, so not 100% sure what they have).
It’s a bit outside of the city, but Preserving is a dedicated punk/hardcore/metal store (and venue): https://www.preservingunderground.com
The Attic in Millvale.
The Preserving Record shop in New Ken has a ton of punk/metal records. Definitely worth checking out.
Attic is your best bet probably. Record exchange in Sq hill and on McKnight rd would be decent as well. Jerry's will have some as well.
Eide’s is an option. It’s at the beginning of the strip district down town.
The Attic has a great selection of metal.
Preserving Underground in New Kensington specializes in Punk, Hardcore and Metal. You’ll love it
If you want punk and metal then you want to go to Pleasant Dreams in polish hill.
The Government Center has some punk and indie stuff too. But I don’t think they go as deep into the crusty stuff and metal as Pleasant Dreams does.
Jerry’s is great if you want to flip through TONS of used stuff.
Went to the Government Center last night to go see a show and that place is pretty cool. I’m guessing it all depends on what you’re looking for but their record selection seems pretty decent. They had a lot of punk metal and rock. Some Underground rap and even some experimental electronic.
Overpriced and rude. Last shop I’d go to and I shop almost daily at record stores. Makes me a little sad because I’ve been going to Eide’s for nearly 40 years.
Now if you need to keep someone busy with comic books or movies while you flip through the bins, this is your place.
Used to love the attic for deals on used records, but now everything is a $35-55 reissue. There's a basement I haven't been down to see, maybe that's where the deals are hiding.

The owner is crass, but the employees have been ok. Rude won't keep me from what I'm looking for.
Edit: OP is out of town and going to a Pens game. Not that far out of the way. Probably shoot a puck from the arena and hit the building.
Seconding recommendations for preserving underground and cruel noise for punk and metal. Would also add get hip records to that list
Fungus is a tightly curated little shop that always has a nice selection of rare records- If you’ve got fairly deep pockets, you’ll find a thing or two there
This is the correct answer. Pop by Grist House brewing while you're there.
There is plenty of used in new arrivals and on the shelves. If you want a VG+ copy of something not in super demand you are typically looking at $8. A little more beat up copy but fine for listening go to jerrys for $3-5. Jerrys son is running the warehouse on Saturdays in Swissvale too. Almost everything is $5
Love government center, they also have a bar and coffee shop and stage inside
Added bonus to pleasant dreams is the best store I have been to in the world for underground comics is right above it, Copacetic
Did both Sunday before last. Visited The Attic, walked up Grant and popped in to Iron Born Pizza and ordered a pie to take over to Grist House to enjoy with a brew. Great outing 😀
Attic Records for sure, but my go to is The Government Center
Came here to say this OP, please go here, there’s parking close and a show tonight too.
This isn’t really a knock on the attic specifically. It’s still a great store. Record prices have exploded everywhere in the past 5 years. Jerry’s prices also went up when Jerry retired.
The Attic in Milvale has the best selection and prices for all genres new and used. Plus the guys that work there are super nice.
Target
Cruel noise is pleasant dreams now, isn’t it?
Chris bought Jerry's from Jerry and made a lot of changes and yes prices are crazy high on anything remotely good
"Vinyl Remains" in Mount Lebanon is decent for a small boutique-y little record shop... he has a lot of brand new pressings that are expensive but I always find a couple gems...
"Pleasant Dreams records" in Polish Hill is decent although small but again, you will find a couple of gems there...
Jerry's has a lot of stuff but I do not like the fact that he will not get a point of sale system and let people use plastic to pay for records...
Eide's is one of those places that while I don't outright avoid it, I have to have that magic combination of free time, convenience, and desire to put up with them.

I'm not sure which guy is the owner, but I've stopped in several times after work, headed back to my car, and three different employees have given me grief over having my laptop bag with me.

Once, I was basically done, having found a record I wanted, so I just came up, bought it, and left. The second time, the guy was short about it, but not quite rude. I pushed back a bit saying that this was my work laptop, and that I was just coming in to check out the records, and he backed off. The third time, the guy was fairly rude and adamant that I couldn't have my laptop with me in the store. I pushed back, and he wouldn't budge. He told me I had to leave it with him, and I refused, saying it wasn't even mine, it belonged to my employer and contained sensitive information, so I wasn't about to leave it with him. Then he said to take it to my car and come back. I said that first of all, I wasn't leaving it unattended in a public garage, and also...if I get to my car I'm going home, not coming back. He kept ranting and I pointed out that if it was about stealing, I couldnt fit a record in my laptop bag anyway. No matter. And he was insistent that I still shop, and give him the laptop.

Eventually I just told him fine, I was leaving. As I walked out, he started with the whole, "Well you don't have to get mad and storm out..." BS, still telling me to come back and shop.

I think I've been in twice since then, have never encountered that guy again. The first time, I shopped without anyone giving me trouble. The second time, the guy said I had to leave the laptop with him, and instead I just left. That was months ago, and I really haven't felt their selection or prices were good enough to justify going through that hassle again.
Gov center for sure
The government center in north side.
The owner died over year ago. It's owned by two former employees.
Short answer:
Jerry's Records
The Attic (these should be your first two choices, the Attic will definitely be better for metal)
Eide's (If you're here as late as Wednesday, they have a significant sale starting then)
Government Center
Fungus Book and Records
Long Play Cafe
The Exchange (multiple outlets, Monroeville being the biggest I think)
Bums me out. Eide's was freaking amazing when I was growing up.
Jerry's is great if you are looking for interesting/weird/strange stuff. i love goin there and looking through everything, but if you are only here a day and are looking specifically for metal/punk stuff, I wouldn't recommend it.
Hit up the Attic for sure. Great selection there. (Plus they still have a few Vicious Blade lp's in stock!)
Preserving Underground out in New Kensington is sorta cool, and specializes in punk/hardcore/metal, but it's a short drive outside of town.
Also take the time to see Pleasant Dreams in Polish Hill.
Government Center is decent, but it's mostly new reissues and things like that. Not really my thing, but you may find a few things there.
Thanks. I haven't been there in almost 10 years.
I kinda get the bag thing. I use to work in the Double Tree Building and had a backpack. No bags is a common policy.
I'm a mellow person. If everyone that I told the bag rule to gave me guff, Eide's be a bit ornery after the umpteenth time too. Just say'n
I took my 10 year old son there a few years back. It was amazing for him too. Now he has a girlfriend and we all remember how amazing that was growing up!! The thrill of someone else wanting to suck face...
That's evil, sending an out-of-towner to McKnightmare.
Aww man, it's all sold out. But I cannot wait to check this venue out!
You can still shop while a show is going on. You may even be able to get into the show. Call the shop.
Thanks! I'm not a vinyl collector, CDs are more my speed. But I'm always interested in live music!
Jerrys records in squirrel Hill, its super cheap and if they don't have the record you're looking for im sure it doesn't exist!
The Attic in Millvale, if you’re okay with a bit of a drive preserving underground in new kensington
Preserving has a very large CD selection too. And vintage merch
On my way here now 🤘🏻
Can’t get in due to the show, damn.
Way back when most everything at Jerry's was $2.83.
I couldn't get enough of Eide's when it was at the narrow, old location with the crooked floor. I think it was on Smithfield and moved to a different building on Penn before where it is now.
The employees there have always since I can remember going way back into the eighties had this contempt attitude
This is the way.
Eides downtown. Have large used and new selection, good prices, and lots of other entertainment items.
Get Hip is normally closed on Sundays, but if you're interested in stopping by tomorrow please feel free to DM me.
No mention of eides?
That sounds magnificent.
I was just in Jerrys and they have it really well organized and still found plenty. Its not like they repriced anything. Even got jerrys writing on them which I love finding
symbolic by death enters the chat
I didn't know this. I've been there pre and post flood. I know there was a lot of stuff that was rumored to be lost and unsalvageable. There might not be anything worth it down there. I haven't even seen a way to get in there in the front or in the stacks / small sideroom.
If by used you mean from 1950, sure
What? They don’t have anything newer than 1980 and their “metal section” is like seven Poison albums.
Government Center!
I don’t shop at Eide’s because back when I was a kid, they sold white supremacist records. Had a whole section for Resistance Records products and everything. Maybe it isn’t like that anymore, but I have no desire to find out.
Yeah but you could swing out to the legendary Arby's roast beef house on McKnight Road
Preserving is the only right answer.
No, used as in 60's, 70's, 80' and 90's too.... Nice big section of 80's new wave, and 70's classic rock. I fill in a lot of my collection with stuff from there.
If you like indie comics, that place is an absolute treasure.
Eide’s was the place to get punk and metal in the 80s and 90s. Now, it’s an afterthought. Once digital music started killing physical media, they scaled way back on music sales. They still sell records and CDs, but damn near every store mentioned in this thread does it better, and with a lot less attitude from staff (an Eide’s tradition that will never change).
I checked it out, love it, thanks!
Dang I hope you had a chance to check it out, or can before you head out. There are some legit finds there.
Heads up about Preserving Underground: they're cash only, I believe
But I did pick up some stuff when I saw Raven there this past fall.
An added bonus is that if you go to the Attic, you can hit up the Hardees!
Too bad Brave New World is long gone :(
ETA: As well as B&D Records that used to be out Springdale, IIRC
I'm a transplant but got to experience Eides when it was in the previous location one building over, and had all the AMAZING vintage posters, flyers, promo materials, etc, on the walls. Tons of great import versions of stuff that back then you'd have to buy online at CD Universe or CD Now.
government center and it’s named after a modern lovers song so u can’t go wrong
Jerry's is the best overall, but since it's used their supply of metal and punk definitely fluctuates. It sells fast.
