I think its weird that it was still on the shelf. That said, I would still eat them if the price was right.

There are always a couple of things that I'll still eat since they take a little longer to go stale.

Like pretzels, Mini Wheats will take a while, candy can go a while.

Many snack foods, sodas, etc in grocery stores are stocked by outside vendors. I'm not sure if Snyders is stocked by a Snyders vendor or the store's grocery dept but either way it is highly unusual to see a popular product that far out of date. Someone made a mistake at some point and if the store were aware the grocery team leader would catch shit from the store leader guaranteed. They get surprise 3rd party audits a few times a year and one out of date product would fail that department and have an effect on the department and store leaders' bonuses. They take out of date products very seriously. It's probably fine to eat though; there is no science to those dates at all.

XavierRex83 t1_je2dprh wrote

Snyder is an outside vendor. All the vendors should be rotating their stock and giving credits for out of date items. Either the store is doing something shady, or Snyder messed something up, and that date might be fine. Also, while 4 months would not be ideal, if that is accurate, it would still be edible as long as it is sealed.

It's been a while, so I don't remember, but some vendors will leave out of dates at the store when issuing credit to dispose of or throw them away themselves. Sometime of vendors left out of dates, and we would let people take them or whatever. Of course, they were out of date by a few days, not months.

giantcucumbergrower t1_je5uvkq wrote

Given what you said I’d think the blame would fall on Snyder then, GE has union employees and non-union department managers. No one is doing some shady shit cause their manager said so, it’d be easier to get your manager fired

1

Racer187 t1_je69blm wrote

Also, there are food banks that pick up out-of-date products like bread, cakes etc. Don’t know if pretzels would be one of those things. Either way the fault falls wholly on the vendor for not catching it. Even if it was only serviced once a week, that vendor has left it there more than a dozen times and said ‘fuck it’.

atree496 t1_je3re9n wrote

Not only are they stocked by outside vendors, they will get pissed if employees move them around at all.

2

DaRiddler70 t1_je2lgq3 wrote

It's a "best by" date not an "you'll die if you eat it after" date.

DixiewreckedGA t1_je4vmn9 wrote

I think we need both of these dates! Excellent idea.

3

RopeAccomplished2728 t1_je5b9ei wrote

Well, for the "It's so bad that it cannot be edible anymore without getting sick." date, you'll be shocked at how long it is.

As long as the product was properly sealed, most product will last between 6 months to a couple of years past the best by date.

Hell, Snapple lasts generally 2 years past the manufacturing date.

This product was made on March 08 of last year. They are probably good until June or July of this year if they were properly sealed. Might not have the best taste but also shouldn't make you sick.

On a side note, is anyone else just completely exhausted of these grocery store prices? I strictly go to Aldi, but their prices are even starting to climb.

21

vegrecluse t1_je3n4nw wrote

Yup. I only go to Aldi but when they don’t have what I need I’m now going to Trader Joe’s … certain produce at Aldi isn’t the best quality so I bounce around stores. Giant Eagle is so expensive and the quality is always bad.

Yes. I just recently stopped going to Aldi, and am only shopping at walmart now.

Im irate. I was just in Giant Eagle, which I generally try to avoid, and the bags of Birdseye frozen veggies were $3+. Goes for $1.23-$2.50 at Walmart.

BobbyCorwen2000 t1_je3lbky wrote

ALDI was bad even before inflation/shrinkflation. They were using the shrinkflation aka Dollar General business model long before any of this shit happened. Price is low but the quantity you're getting is zilch. No value for what you're actually getting for the price you pay. Certain things they are still good for but IMO better off at GE or wherever else you want to go besides Aldi.

The UPC barcode is the same on every package. Their computers don’t know the date on every package. This is just a coincidence.

Is that the expiration date or the manufacture date? you can always bring it back and they will exchange it.

11

puddinteeth OP t1_je25nkd wrote

Valid question, I didn't think of that — there's no other date listed anywhere on the package so I assume it's expiration (isn't that required)?

1

RopeAccomplished2728 t1_je5bfth wrote

It is the best by date.

The manufacturing date is below it. The 0308 in the code is the month and the date it was made.

Going to honestly with you here, GE is pretty notoriously terrible at properly rotating their shelves. Pretzels are nbd but I would consider paying attention to dates on things like milk, eggs, and meat there… I know a lot of people who worked at several GEs and all of them were crap at it

kdd20 t1_je31z10 wrote

I’ve gotten several expired items recently (I do curbside pick up orders). They were noticeably expired, like looked gross.

Mountain_Ferret9978 t1_je2gz0n wrote

Worked at Target for 7 years. Dates on snack foods are usually a manufactured date. If it has an expiration date, it will explicitly say “best by” or “use by.” Those pretzels are just fine.

Ok_Elephant2777 t1_je2mvoj wrote

That stuff is so loaded with preservatives it should keep until the next millennium. Three months ain’t diddly.

I don't remember ever seeing that at Aldi's.

community market in bloomfield (which is owned by GE) has been notoriously bad about this for me. it's the only place i've ever shopped at where i specifically check the expiration date of everything i pick up. definitely sucks as a customer.

Aggravating_Foot_528 t1_je2bv39 wrote

It's not owned by GE. It's owned by a Jewish family close to the Shapiras and some of the other founding families and a lot of times (like the one in the Fox Chapel plaza) Giant Eagle pays the lease for Community to use the space so that way a friend is blocking the space from a larger competitor to take over.

In the town I grew up in there was a small mom and pop grocery store. They had some bins in the store full of items with "Reduced for quick sale" stickers on them. All of them were expired and at a discounted price. My Grandmother lived almost entirely off of food from these bins for as long as I can remember. For as long as she was able to shop for herself her fridge and cabinets were filled with items that had those stickers on them.

Walmart does this too from time to time, usually on some random endcap. A lot of stuff is good way after the sell by date. That's why a lot of things have changed "sell by" to "best before/by" to be more accurate.

My first job out of college was printing FDA labels for dialysis chemicals. This is not an expiration date - it’s lot info for traceability.

It’s required in case there is a problem with the batch, they can trace the ingredients all the way back to the vendor for each batch. Then, if a recall is necessary, the store will know which lots to pull from the shelf.

This is shelf stable food. It’s not going to go bad in 3 months. Hell, eggs last longer than that.

I believe it’s called the “flash food” program… selling recently expired/ nearing expiration foods at a deep discount. Details on the flash food. Com site. This likely means that they are tying to sell for profit items that would typically be donated to say like food pantry’s.

That is totally on the vendor for not rotating and removing out of date product. Snyders gives credit to the store for out of date and damaged product.

A few days old it would be okay to eat but a risk of tasting stale. I would return it for replacement or refund.
