Hi everyone! I'm moving out of Pittsburgh soon and will be renting my own moving truck because I'm moving long distance. So I don't need a full moving company service, but I will probably need help moving everything into and packing the truck. Can anyone recommend reliable and affordable movers who would provide that service? Thanks in advance!

Friendly Movers was great to me and my friends when moving a few years ago. They are often mentioned on this sub when this question comes up. Very affordable. Not sure if they offer a labor-only service but I don’t see why not.

Years ago we used them to unload a truck that we had packed. No clue if they still off just labor, though.

If you book your truck through uhaul they offer moving services for load and unload that you can book after you confirm the truck rental.

I did this exact thing and it was fantastic. I was able to move out of state totally solo. Here’s how it went down. I used uhaul’s movinghelp to hire 2 movers at each end of the trip.

  • night before: picked up truck at uhaul and left my car there
  • 7:30 a.m. 2 movers showed up at my old house, loaded the truck, took one hour (I had moved everything to the first floor during the week before the move).
  • 9 a.m. back to Uhaul, they attached trailer to truck and guided me while I drove my car on it
  • 9:30 - 4:00 drove 6.5 hours to my new place
  • 4:00 - drove my car off the trailer and disconnected it at uhaul in new city
  • 4:45 - 2 different movers unloaded truck into new place took 1 hour.
  • 6:00 - dropped off truck at uhaul drove my car to new home. Had a beer.

If you haven't committed yet -

I'm a huge fan of the PODS-style moving containers. You can get them delivered early (assuming you have a place to put it) and load at your own pace. It's like $150 just to rent the unit for a month, then when you're ready you pay whatever fee relating to where you move, and you can take your time to unload later.

Multiple friends have used them to move over the past 10 years or so. So much less stressful than the mad rush of "everything has to get out in one day, all hands on deck" with a truck rental. And you don't have to drive the huge thing to it's destination.

There's multiple companies that do something similar. All my friends used the PODS brand and never had any issues. I've been jerked around so many times by U-Haul, renting from one location, oh we don't have the truck you'll have to go to Moon to pick it up kind of things. My brother was driving one from Latrobe to Virginia in the hills and the brake calipers straight fell off and he had to wait 8 hours in the middle of no-where for someone to come fix it and walk up a hill to get cell signal.

Oh, interesting! I’d not heard of this before. I will definitely look into it, thanks !

Seconding pods. Have moved from Pittsburgh to Florida and back using them. The pod is slightly more than just a moving truck in my experience but imo it's worth the added cost of you can swing it just because of the freedom of loading and unloading over a week instead of trying to slam everything out in a couple days. Plus I don't have to drive a shitty U-Haul for hours on end and can spend that time in my car which I enjoy driving.

We used a company called Meta Movers and were really happy with them.

We used Extra Hands Pgh for our move from one neighborhood to the other in 2019. They rented the uhaul, drove to us, packed up all the boxes and unloaded in the proper rooms at the new house. Even had to take a door off to get some stuff upstairs. They were on time, professional, and very nice. Very quick and done in 3 hours. Super affordable and saved us a lot of headache!

You're looking for people to load a truck with boxes? You don't need movers, this is just a simple odd job that you can have college kids do for a case of beer.

Any ideas on where I might find these college kids? I agree I don’t need professional movers, just reliable people…and am curious where to find them. Thanks!

Are you asking how to find college students in Pittsburgh, which has no fewer than six campuses in town?
