I love the halloween vibes but have long outgrown my trick or treating age, am not really one for big Halloween parties, and don't have a place for trick or treaters to really come visit (internal only access apartment building with a locked front entrance, which is a shame because I was hoping my first proper place outside of college I'd be able to hand out full sized candy bars, guess that'll have to be next year).

So are there any organizations for a good cause that need a helping hand on Halloween? I'm a good cook, have a hatchback that can haul a decent amount of stuff, and am relatively strong for my size even if I'm not in the best shape atm 😅

I love that you want to help others enjoy the festivities. You’re a good person.

The organization I belonged to in college used to bag candy at the local police department for the officers to hand out to the kids. I’m not sure if they take walk-in volunteers but it might be worth stopping by the municipal building in your area and asking someone there.

Yes!!!

Hundred Acres Manor benefits Animal Friends and Homeless Children's Education Fund, and they take volunteers to help run the haunted house attraction!

Maybe volunteer for a local Trunk or Treat Event?

I honestly only have passing familiarity with these things, I assume it's more for places where you might not want kids going door to door?

Might be a bit late in the game to get involved for this year though. Especially since this sort of volunteering might be regulated under the state's background check process to volunteer with kids. That law was part of the fallout from the Sandusky thing.

The lighting and who owns the property aren’t the issue. Do you really think parents will be comfortable letting their kids get candy from a random person set up on a corner? OP seems to have good intentions but you’re not thinking of how parents of little kids are going to view this.

I'll look into it, thanks! At the very least I'll do my annual halloween themed donations to the closest animal shelter, I like giving them little cloth pumpkin hides and blankets with ghosts on the, stuff like that so I'm happy to cozy up at home with a scary movie if I'm a bit late to the party.

And totally understandable on needing a background check, but I've not heard of Sandusky, you mean the town? I'm new to the area (got here 3 months back) so I don't know much about any history

Ah thank you, I appreciate it! I just miss being 7 years old and dressing up like a pokemon or something, love to see that energy still going even if I don't have kids of my own. And I just love seeing what people do with their halloween decorations; this is my first halloween in pittsburgh and I've seen some cool stuff!

I'll check and see if they have any flyers up for needing volunteers, that's a good idea. Thanks!

It was referring to a particularly nasty incident, so I kept my comment kind of vague assuming most people would know the reference.

The law was in response to the Penn State University child sex abuse scandal about a decade ago. Jerry Sandusky was an assistant coach for the football program at Penn State and was caught molesting children, and the botched response by the university to the discovery was a huge thing.

FYI - I had to get a background check to volunteer at an event at a local Catholic Church. I spoke to someone at the state and explained the sooner they could do the check, the better since I could not do anything until I was cleared by them and they very nicely obliged within 24 hours. If you ask nicely, maybe they will work with you to speed things along.

Different neighborhoods do it differently. I’m actually pretty involved with my neighborhood and know everyone in 5 block radius I understand what you are saying I was offering the person somewhere to enjoy Halloween

I know a lot of neighborhoods do trunk or treats. In my neighborhood you just sign up to volunteer maybe check for one in your area or an area nearby.
