So covid is still a thing. Person who was joining me got it, but I’m still determined to go cause I’ve never been to Pittsburgh. I want to enjoy Hidden Harbor cocktails on Friday, eat a bunch of good food all day and then have a blast at the sold out Halloween party on Saturday. Hoping to find like minded soul(s) who want to join in on one or some or all.

Don’t overlook the Tiki Lounge - it’s certainly more grimy, but also much more a tiki experience if Tiki is your thing

Adding it to the list! Also is Lucy’s still open for Banh Mi’s?

Be warned, Tiki Lounge is nothing like Hidden Barbour or any "real" tiki bar like Smuggler's Cove or something. It is more of cheap cocktail bar.

What besides tiki decor & tiki themed drinks makes a ‘real’ tiki bar?

Real tiki bars use very specific and uncommon liquors in their drinks. I’ve never been to Tiki Bar and I have a very basic understanding of tiki sub-culture but I’ve never heard it mentioned in any discussion about tiki bars. Hidden Harbor is nationally known and people come from out of state (like OP) for the sole purpose of going there

You generally aren’t going to find shit faced college kids doing shots at a “real” tiki bar either. It’s a pretty classy crowd.

A couple issues here: Any bar in PA is going to be limited to serving only the liquor available through the plcb & in terms of rum specifically, unfortunately their selection lacking.

Secondly, making sweeping statements about a place you’ve never stepped foot into is just odd. I’ve been to many Tiki bars & the Tiki Lounge certainly fits the criteria & is pretty damn unique. I have nothing against hidden harbor at all (& frequent it), but also don’t see it as particularly unique either.

The tiki culture is not about using premade mixes and cheap liquor, which that does. I went once, had a mai tai and never had a cocktail there again. They just don't do it the way tiki fanatics want it, it's a whole different style.

That’s fair enough, I shouldn’t critique a place I’ve never been. I was generalizing it due to the area.

I know HH uses some of Maggie’s rums and liquors. If I’m not mistaken Maggies make some that are very hard to find in PA.

As I mentioned I’m no expert on it and I’m not even much of a drinker. I sort of dabble in the subculture and am still learning much about it. You may very well be more knowledgeable than I am on the topic.

hey chief - tiki lounge is great but can get a little collegiate on the weekends. if you can get there earlier in the day/evening you'll be golden. Visit the Strip District on a Fri/Sat/Sun morning for some wild street market shopping/eating/drinking.

regarding haunted harbor, I was keen on going but I saw they were sold out so I wrote it off. If you don't have any takers by Saturday, DM me I may be interested in a ticket.

Lastly, there is an free event/outdoor Vintage clothing market going on Sunday morning 10/30 from 10-4PM at the Highline, a repurposed commercial complex near downtown. They have a rockin' surf band playing around noon [The Yeggs]. Stop on out and say hi to the guitarist ;) - Wish I could link you some details, just search 'Pittsburgh Pickers' on IG or FB you should be able to find a flyer.

Good luck mate, just hang around maggies farm, HH, tiki lounge, and you'll link up with some cool like minded folks.

Nobody is being as direct as they should so I’ll do you a solid since you are an out of towner. If you are a mature adult you want to be nowhere near the South Side (Tiki Lounge) on Friday or Saturday night.

Also post in r/tiki. Hidden Harbor has a pretty solid following in that sub.

Hidden Harbor is amazing. For a good second choice, I’d recommend The Slippery Mermaid (ESPECIALLY if you also like sushi). It’s about a 15-20 minute drive outside of the city in Sewickley but I love it.
