Always have, even when I lived in the south and no one knew what I was talking about.

I remember getting that blue MAC card for my bank account when I was 11 in 1996 and thinking I was a baller

Still a MAC machine to me. As I leave it with money, I say, "Thanks, Mac."

MAC won the battle but lost the war. MAC's policy was no fees for using ATMs. MAC became the most popular card. Then they were bought out by the big banks and that's why you now have fees for using an ATM.

But odds are your bank will charge you on their end for using another machine. Any time I don't visit my bank ATMs or take out cash when I shop I get hit coming and going, usually $2.95 from the owner of the ATM and $2.95 from my own bank. Nearly $6 a withdrawal. Shameful.

Clearview FCU does not charge me for using them.

Lucky! I know there are plenty of banks out there that are graceful with their ATM fees, but not many.

How trusting they must've been to bank out of a van lurking on the street

Mellon is now BNY Mellon and doesn’t issue debit cards any longer.

Yes, Mellon sold that business to Citizens.

This is the answer. It happened around 2004'ish, or whenever Citizens entered the Pittsburgh market, buy purchasing Mellons retail banking operations.

Ah back when some banks changed names yearly.

Equibank -> Integra -> National City -> First Niagara -> Key Bank

mmphoto412 t1_ixwdixo wrote

The example you gave was the result of mergers or takeovers.

In the case of Mellon they sold that part of the business to RBS Citizens. Also around the same time BNY sold their retail to JPMC. In 07 Mellon and BNY merged although it was really a take over from BNY.

There has been so much consolidation in the past 20 year that names don’t changes as much

National City was acquired by PNC. Antitrust regulators required them to spin off about 50 branches, mostly in Pittsburgh area, where both banks had a lot of branches. First Niagara ended up acquiring about 50 branches, but PNC kept the majority outside of Pittsburgh.
