Yes, Mellon sold that business to Citizens.

This is the answer. It happened around 2004'ish, or whenever Citizens entered the Pittsburgh market, buy purchasing Mellons retail banking operations.

Ah back when some banks changed names yearly.

Equibank -> Integra -> National City -> First Niagara -> Key Bank

The example you gave was the result of mergers or takeovers.

In the case of Mellon they sold that part of the business to RBS Citizens. Also around the same time BNY sold their retail to JPMC. In 07 Mellon and BNY merged although it was really a take over from BNY.

There has been so much consolidation in the past 20 year that names don’t changes as much

National City was acquired by PNC. Antitrust regulators required them to spin off about 50 branches, mostly in Pittsburgh area, where both banks had a lot of branches. First Niagara ended up acquiring about 50 branches, but PNC kept the majority outside of Pittsburgh.
