Since Blue Bonnet Bakery in Homestead closed, we've been missing our favorite treat. They used to make dome shaped cupcakes called gems. They came in chocolate or vanilla flavored and were topped with a fondant-type icing. Are there any other local bakeries that make something similar? Is there a name other than "gems" that we could/should search for? Or does anyone have a recipe for something like that that we could try to make them ourselves? Thanks in advance for any info/ideas you may have.

Ugh, I constantly miss Blue Bonnet… honeymooners, long John’s, thumbprints, Linzer cookies… I don’t think I’ll ever be able to find a honeymooner like theirs. I’m sorry I don’t have a recommendation for the gems, though I do remember them!

I am not familiar with blue bonnet, but small cupcake with fondant icing makes me think of petit fours which may possibly be another name for the gems you are looking for?

Dave’s Terrace Bakery in Baldwin makes gems! I’d say they are pretty similar to Blue Bonnet

It's funny how attached we get to these things, and I know the family retired, but I wish someone would've stepped up to keep it going. Or at least share the recipes with the community. lol!
