I just signed up to work in the warehouse and I'm wondering what to expect.
It's OK if it's only temp, my truck is broke down and I need to make some extra cash. If they lay me off I can always pick up something else elsewhere.
Where did you sign up? There’s Sort Centers, Delivery Stations and Fulfillment Centers in the area and all 3 do things a bit differently. I worked a few years at PIT5 (Sort Center).
I did PIT5 as a second part time job and it was fine. The management changed a lot but as long as you do your job, no one bothers you.
I do miss the fact that I got payed $16 an hour to essentially work out 😂
Yeah, in general it's fine but I do not miss unloading trucks in inbound during the summer. If it's 90 outside, you can bet it's 110 in that truck.
Well, I milked cows for 15 years and there were plenty of nights it was probably 110 in the parlor with 100 cows jammed in the holding pen. As a bonus, we'd end the night looking like we'd been dipped in shit! I trust that won't be the case at Amazon.
You will certainly not come out smelling like poop 😂. It really was an easy job as long as you do your job and stay on task.
I told them I’d stay on call and just pick up shifts when I wanted (they have a good system for picking up and dropping shifts) but I guess they don’t allow that.
Aww, that's too bad!
I could never understand how they don’t get a better ac or heat system for inside the truck. I heard other locations have a tube that goes the whole way in to blow cold air.
I would do any job there…except go kart unloading (dunno if they still have those). Whoever created those didn’t think that process through 😂
LOL, I look at my current job as an 8-hour workout. It's the upside to it being boring AF!
Always a sweaty workout, unless I was in smalls. Smalls was just a lot of walking.
Is it hot in the warehouse year-round?
No it’s actually somewhat chilly until you get moving. But stacking boxes for hours can build up some sweat. Being inside the truck unloading in the summer is another story of sweat 😅
Can't be any hotter than being in a milking parlor with 100 cows jammed in the holding pen. I swear you can see the heat rolling off them like a wave ...
Edited to add, thanks for the tip though. I'll layer a sweatshirt over a T so I can strip down if it gets too warm, same thing I do on my day job.
The Imperial location.
There’s two right next to each other, PIT2 (fulfillment) and PIT9 (sort center).
LOL, I guess I'll find out when I get there!
Edited to add: I have to go in for my pre-boarding stuff on Friday, so I guess I'll find out the details then.
If it’s anything like where I work, you’ll be fine. The facilities are slow right now, even though peak is literally starting next week. You’ll be expected to do a lot of walking (5+ miles per shift) while working, so have good safety shoes.
Will they let me wear crocs?
I have foot issues, one foot is swollen up twice the size of the other and crocs are the only shoes I can find that will fit the bad one right now.
I already walk (hobble, lol) 10+ miles on my day job now so 5 more probably won't kill me.
You will find out for sure at your onboarding on Friday, but I am gonna have to say no, they are going to require safety shoes for warehouse work and crocs won't even come close to qualifying.
Well THAT sucks! The union steward at my main job gave me grief too but when I said I'd have to quit if I couldn't wear shoes that were comfortable, they decided crocs were OK, lol. (They were shorthanded enough they didn't want to lose me. I doubt Amazon would care though.)
Well, if the job doesn't pan out, I'll go back to housecleaning I guess. Anyone need a cleaner?!
Crocs are a no go.
Yeah, I got a message saying I'll have to order safety shoes after my onboarding meeting tomorrow.
Well, I'll give it a shot and see if they're comfortable. If not, I can always find something else to do!
A follow-up question. It looks like my shifts will encompass Dec. 24 and 25. Will Amazon employees be expected to work on Xmas or are they closed?
Closed on xmas day chief, your schedule will adjust a week or two away from Xmas. I also wondered that when I started working for Amazon.
Oh that's good to know! I would work Xmas day on my main job if they needed me, but a throwaway job? umm not so much, so I would have just quit then if it were required.

They will use you for the holidays and find a way to fire you when things slow down. I know two people that worked at PIT2 and hated it.
