Update: we went to Dad's and it was great! Will definitely keep the other suggestions in mind though for future trips. Thanks everyone!

Fiance and I are driving across the state and want to stop for dinner around Pittsburgh. Give us your best suggestions for restaurants near 76! We're open to all foods and cuisines, though we'd prefer a sit down place. TIA!

Dad’s Pub in Monroeville is about 5 minutes off the turnpike and has great food

We ended up going here and it was great! Exactly what we needed. Also it's definitely not in an old Pizza Hut haha

Lol I forgot to mention that 😂

Edit to add: that’s how you know it’s good

I'll second this. Although you may need a nap before you hit the road again!

Not necessarily in Pittsburgh but this would be an interesting stop! You can see it from the turnpike.

They blatantly ignored COVID rules. I wouldn't trust their food safety practices anymore.

Bedford County as a whole ignored most of Covid.

I feel like most of this state outside of Allegheny County, SEPA, and a couple other spots ignored the covid rules.

Underrated: Nick Marie's Esta Esta in Monroeville. It's your basic red-sauce Italian restaurant but it's pretty much like stepping into a time machine to the 1970s.

I haven’t been there, but there is a new Mexican restaurant off the turnpike at Route 8 exit (I think that’s exit 39) called Tequila Jalisco that I’ve heard good things about.

If it's not too late, Big Rigs BBQ in Monroeville (exit 57) is top-notch! Its order at the counter and then sit down to eat, but everything is good, and the Pit Beans are phenomenal!

big rigs is the most disappointed ive been with bbq in my whole life. why does their brisket taste and have mouth feel like smoked roast beef? where are their smoke rings? it's a disgrace to bbq. I should have known better when my friend recommended it and said they love the nashville hot chicken. of course it's fried and you don't have to taste the crap bbq. if you can smoke your meats inside where you serve the customers, you are not making real bbq. its a fancy oven you add logs to.

op avoid this place unless you want ghosts of texan past to haunt you.

You're the first person I've met who didn't like Big Rigs! I think it's excellent especially the brisket and the burgers. You must've had a really bad piece. Miles ahead of Holy Smokes.

Beeftoday t1_iy20nmf wrote

trust me, those in the bbq community dont care for it much either. its terrible. their brisket is an embarrassment to brisket. they over cook everything. even the photos on their site you can't see smoke rings.

I've traveled all over the us for bbq. big rigs is a joke.

Lil_Phantoms_Lawyer t1_iy33e94 wrote

Fascinating. So who do you like in Monroeville?

1

Beeftoday t1_iy3ojy7 wrote

I'll be honest, monroeville doesn't really have anywhere good to eat unless you want fast. dad's, carhops, thats really about it. otherwise it's pizza. nothing to really brag about here. rather cook myself.

Lil_Phantoms_Lawyer t1_iy40iuk wrote

Well BBQ in general who do you like?

1

Beeftoday t1_iy4150n wrote

i don't eat bbq around here because it sucks. if im gonna eat bbq we'll make it at home in the offset with post oak.

1

Lil_Phantoms_Lawyer t1_iy452x7 wrote

You consider yourself a member of the local BBQ community but can't name a place you like?

2

Beeftoday t1_iy4d2d0 wrote

im sorry my standards are above what the local restaurants can put out. also, more people are into bbq than just restaurant owners.

I don't know why you're so butthurt I hate big rigs, you sound just like the owner when someone gives him the 1* he deserves. the other mediocre bbq places around here are nothing to write home about either. Nothing has tickled my fancy better than what I can make at home, especially when it can be made properly. with a proper smoke ring and mouth feel.

I urge you to taste actual good bbq. travel, do a bbq tour in texas, go to nc and do a whole hog tour. watch some videos online and see why having a brisket that is the consistency of roast beef is not quality brisket. why the first few hours are so important to smoking your meat correctly and why pellet smoking is for the birds.

Im not surprised the folks around here who consider a bbq, hot dogs on propane to take offense to my take that the bbq around here sucks, but it does. sucks to suck.

Lil_Phantoms_Lawyer t1_iy4dftn wrote

I'm not offended you don't like Big Rig's.... to each their own. If you don't like any BBQ around here that's fine, I'm just surprised you consider yourself in the know of the local BBQ community when you stick your nose up to them so much though.

If I was to go anywhere in the world for BBQ where would I go that's good? A specific place not a region.

Beeftoday t1_iy4dp0g wrote

i dont know what that has to do with me hating the bbq around here? you're really coming off as butt hurt that this bbq is not impressive in the slightest

2

Lil_Phantoms_Lawyer t1_iy4e5x4 wrote

Okay that's fine, where is your favorite BBQ place in the entire world?

0

Beeftoday t1_iy4liql wrote

what kind of bbq are we talking? let me ask you a question. what do you actually know about bbq? cause these questions are getting stupid. you can't compare whole hog to texas style to kansas city.

1

Lil_Phantoms_Lawyer t1_iy4u0d2 wrote

Okay so you're a terribly difficult person to try and have a conversation with lol.

−1

Beeftoday t1_iy5034v wrote

thats probably because it wasn't a conversation. you questioned my opinions, and i answered. i think you're just mad i don't think big rigs is good bbq cause you seemed to take it rather personal. you also won't tell me your experience with bbq. once i again whats you're favorite bbq in the whole world is so vague how can i begin to answer that? if you want recommendations for good bbq, the answer becomes dependent on other relevant factors.

are you only able to eat at one bbq place in austin? im gonna have to say franklins because its the go to classic. but if you want some really awesome bbq go to la barabaque, micklethwait, and leroy and lewis. drive up to fort worth for goldees.

want whole hog in nc, you have to have skylight inn and sam jones then pick a couple others, but nothing will top skylight. get some chicharrons for snacking later.

want to try and bbq at home, first off don't try to do it in a pellet smoker, they suck. make sure you know how to properly trim a brisket, something big rigs does not. choose your wood wisely, texas is known for post oak. watch some how to videos online. learn the important temps and times. meat will be absorbing the most smoke the first two hours of smoking. this is when your ring is formed and is why its important to not f it up.

2

Lil_Phantoms_Lawyer t1_iy50u74 wrote

I really do not care that you don't like Big Rig's, I'm sorry for asking you questions. Really, I am.

−2

Beeftoday t1_iy52kg2 wrote

are you? cause questions like this, "You consider yourself a member of the local BBQ community but can't name a place you like?" is really snotty and you seemed to really question what kind of knowledge i have. so clearly something butthurt you in my responses.

2

Lil_Phantoms_Lawyer t1_iy53f6v wrote

Honestly you just sound like an asshole lol. But not because you don't like Big Rig's.

−2

Beeftoday t1_iy57zfi wrote

probably because you wanted to instigate something since someone had a different opinion to you.

3

BorisTheMansplainer t1_iy3klfs wrote

The smoke ring doesn't really say anything about how good or bad the brisket is.

1

Beeftoday t1_iy3lh2v wrote

lol, you're hilarious. smoke ring is important to how well you bbq. don't call it bbq if you can't even get a smoke ring, which isn't surprising because they use a fancy oven.

the quality of their brisket is still absolutely terrible. its over cooked and has the consistency of roast beef. so now we have a bbq joint that A. can't smoke their meat well and B. can't cook their meat right.

Texas would ruin them if that was served down there and they're some of the nicest people ive ever met.

There’s a ton of options around Cranberry exit. Most of the chains. But if u want something a little nicer, Bravo is pretty great Italian veeeery close to the exit
