Someone randomly venmoed me $250. The description was “catch this crook”. They commented to refund them. Confused due to scams like this. What do I do?Daneosaurus t1_ivc5rm7 wrote
I have accidentally sent over $400 to a stranger with the identical name, but -32 instead of -34. It’s very possible this was in error.

I did this once, too, and was freaking out because I actually couldn't afford to lose that money (and still owe the money I accidentally sent to the wrong person). I messaged the person and explained, and they did send it back. Thankfully this was before this scam was a known thing. I also had messaged Venmo, but wasn't getting a response (actually never got a response!)
So yes, there is a scam like this. There are also mistakes and venmo doesn't make it easy to fix them.
