I don't know what kind of work you do, but many school districts are in need of substitute custodians and cafeteria staff. You will have to spend a little money (less than $100) getting your clearances, but if you sign up with multiple districts, you may be able to work quite steadily and it can lead to a permanent job. I temped for 2 districts last year and at the end of the school year, both offered me full-time jobs.

Housecleaning is also a nice gig, and once you get one client who is happy with your work, often they'll refer you to friends and neighbors. I took one job off Craigslist years ago and ended up cleaning for a whole neighborhood!
