Without insurance, there's no one to pay out what you're entitled to, there's no responsible party here. I hope the damage isn't too bad, I'm sorry you're going through this.

had a similar issue when a duplex I was renting burnt down. i also didn't have renters and was entitled to pretty much nothing. the red cross offered some help, and you can claim losses on your taxes, but besides that there isn't really anything. I hope it's all delegated to one area or something and damages aren't too bad for you and you can at least salvage most of your belongings.

As a PSA for others: IF YOU RENT, GET RENTERS INSURANCE. ITS REALLY CHEAP AND WILL SAVE YOU IF SOMETHING UNFORESEEN HAPPENS. IT HAPPENED TO ME. IT HAPPENED TO THIS GUY. IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE

I swear this PSA has been made 1000 times yet people still don’t heed it. Renter insurance is dirt fucking cheap.

and I get it, as a person who suffered from a disaster and didn't at that time have renters insurance. you think "the chances of it happening to me are so low". but it matters

I know someone who became homeless due to a fire next door. Red Cross showed up at the scene and handed out vouchers for a few days at a hotel, and some Walmart cards. Nothing huge, but in the shock of being involved with basically losing everything, at least got them through the next couple of days while they tried to sort things out.

It sounds like OP is away currently, but if/when they return still may be able to take advantage of what they're offering so they're not literally out in the cold.

off the top of my head, as a landlord, I doubt you're entitled to any coverage of your personal property-I know the insurance I carry on my rentals does not cover tenants property. As for temp housing talk to your landlord/PM-I would think it depends on the extent of the damage. Feel free to PM if you'd like more advice or have questions.

I pay $90/year for Erie renters insurance that covers $300,000 in damages. Erie is probably more expensive than others you see on TV all the time but better coverage and service.

Also it's a good idea to take pictures every so often of your place, especially the more valuable stuff. Keep a log of what the stuff is in terms of make, model, other specs, etc.

Sorry I can't help you with the present situation.

So, on the surface, you’re screwed… but are you aware of any issues with the pipe? Any previous leaks reported? Any maintenance work on them?
Is the pipe in question in a heated part of the home?

If you can prove any type of negligence or Faulty repairs then maybe you have a shot

Also… it burst in the apartment upstairs?… why did it burst? Did they clog something due to negligence? Was their apartment heated properly?

I'm sorry this happened to you. I would recommend doing a Gofundme to try and raise some funds. I've had good luck with that for other tragedies.

For everyone else, please use this tragedy as a lesson to protect yourselves. I just signed up for renters insurance (checked Geico and Liberty Mutual) and for, like, $10/mo you can protect yourself against this kind of horrible situation.

Maybe you should pull yourself up by the bootstraps and gain some humility and respect for others.

Maybe op should have gotten some fucking insurance instead of going on the internet hoping that someone would tell him that it is someone else's responsibility to pay for his ruined belongings.
