It's not going to win awards for aesthetics, it's clean and the people that work there take pride in their work. It's a neighborhood joint, but they have a large regular following. I love the little things like the bar top riders that you can set your plates on ( names of long customers on plaques ) , the food is consistent and good portions, and the vibe is very familiar. It's not the 'best' food in town on any one thing, but they make a good plate, at a good price, and it's off the beaten path, making it one of the hidden gems.

I could list off restaurants that win the look / feel award, or have better plates, but they are all pricier and trendier and pretty much well known. Try it out, worst case you could say 'lolwerd lied to me' , best case, you found a new haunt.

Calling it out; you need to order off the authentic menu.

The menu with the general tso's ain't that much different than any other Chinese place with general tso's.

Pretty sure the type of people ordering general tso's at Chengdu will never really be convinced to do otherwise

I second the authentic menu, it's INCREDIBLE. Hot & sour yam noodle is such a good starter and I literally crave it all the time. Spicy Beef Mignon chengdu style is so good.

I fully invite people to add their favorites, because like I said above, I lived in lawrenceville and polish hill forever and now that we're in swissvale I can't stop eating here.

Even though it's right on McKnight Road, Sushi Tomo gets overlooked because of its proximity to the must-visit food experience that is the McKnight Road Arby's.

Seriously though, Sushi Tomo.

I live in Ross and my boyfriend and I get Sushi Tomo at least once a week; it’s so damn good and they’re so nice in there.

3

loubones17 t1_j1zcowc wrote

I loved it there too until some years ago - they had made health violations and rodents if I recall. Buyer beware!

2

Sk8104s810 t1_j1zsalq wrote

I believe you may be recalling incorrectly.

I used to work in facility services (laundry, pest control, sanitization, etc.) and have friends that still work at the company. I used to service Sushi Tomo (which is how I discovered it) and I never saw a single red flag. I've eaten there 8-10 times a year since 2008 and never heard such a thing.

Can you point me to where you may have seen this information?

3

The Blue Flame in Jefferson Hills seems to have gotten their stuff together. My wife and I went there last week. First time for me ever, first time for her in over 20 years. The place had a bad reputation, but the food was excellent. It's diner-like comfort food. They have an ice cream bar in the restaurant with Hershey's varieties. They're only open for breakfast and lunch. I highly recommend the hot turkey and hot roast beef sandwiches.

Right on! In October, I was on my way to Butler's Golf Course in Elizabeth and stopped at the almost famous Blue Flame for the 1st time, after driving by it for decades. It was a hearty breakfast, a nice family diner vibe, great service. My buddy's parents used to go there for CB club meetings, place looks the same from the outside now as it did in the 80's. I'll definitely try the hot RB sandwich next time.
