It’s a pre-GPS system used to navigate around pittsburgh, using “belts”. You can still see some of the signs up around various parts of the city. There are the Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple belts, with the red being the farthest out and purple basically just being downtown.

I used it a lot during high school 20 years ago to play sports all and pick up against other schools. One route followed a belt for nearly the entire trip so it was by far the easiest way to explain directions to other people. Everyone I explained it to acted like I was high.
