This reminds me of two stories. Once I was called out to give an estimate to some folks to fence in their yard. It was squirrel hill, I believe. They had just jumped on the urban chicken bandwagon and wanted a 6’ high fence to keep the deer from eating their chickens. Once while working in a car dealership a young guy came and told me there was a hummingbird trapped in the showroom. He took me to where it landed and was still perched. It was a dragonfly.

I mean deer are herbivores but ok…

heili t1_j5ofbj5 wrote

Deer like many other herbivores are opportunistic carnivores as well.

They will eat birds, mice, etc. So will cows.

Chickens?

They will eat Turkey polts and smaller chicks. Yes. Grown ones/adults? No. They’d be more likely to stamp or kick them to death. But a cow or deer will attack/bite and kill a young kitten, or puppy. Eat them, afterwards? No, probably not.

I have seen them eat carrion, things like dead rabbits, crows, and squirrels. They’re opportunistic feeders for those things. They don’t hunt them to eat them like predators will—but will enthusiastically eat another animal’s leftovers.

Uh no. Google that. They've even been caught on camera at the body farm eating human bones.

There are numerous videos on the internet of deer eating birds, but I don’t think there are any of chickens.

motociclista t1_j5qh8wf wrote

They may eat a small bird if they find one that can’t fly. But they’re not chicken predators.

It probably is. We are in an era of people purposefully saying stupid things online because it generates outrage/disgust/whatever and all of the people correcting them (and all of the bona fide idiots unironically defending the bait) generates engagement for the algorithms.

Ok_Elephant2777 t1_j5n4aol wrote

Possibly rabbit poop. Depends on the size. Deer scat is bigger. Herbivore poop generally doesn’t smell that bad. Carnivore poop, on the other hand, ugh!

ryan21o t1_j5n4vk3 wrote

My brother in Christ, how much do you think rabbits poop?

26

distilledfluid t1_j5n6x9t wrote

You can tell how old a rabbit is by the number of pellets it leaves behind. This one is clearly 54.

ScratchMoore t1_j5n81av wrote

So close. That’s from a deer. That pile is probably half the size of a typical suburban rabbit.

Rabbit is a bit smaller… country girl here…over run by deer. They eat all my shrubs and flowers, even my holly bushes which they aren’t supposed to like!! They look like Edward Scissor Hands got to them!

Ok_Elephant2777 t1_j5q3jdh wrote

Also, you may try planting lavender with your flowers. We’ve done that for a couple years and the deer can’t stand the stuff.

Ok_Elephant2777 t1_j5q38fn wrote

We have the same issues here with deer and rabbits. They look really cute from a distance but can be destructive as all get out. I’ve found that Liquid Fence, liberally applied, can be a deterrent. Good luck this Spring!

This reminds me of a very outdated joke about an Indian chief who takes a squab out into the woods. They come across a pile of poop in the trail and the squab asks what it is. The chief says he must use all his senses in the woods.

Chief: Use your eyes

Squab: It looks like shit

Chief: Use your nose

Squab: it smells like shit

Chief: how does it feel?

Squab, hesitantly: it feels like shit

Chief: Taste it

Squab: Taste it??

Chief: Taste!

Squab: (puts some in his mouth) It tastes like shit

Chief: oh, it’s shit, don’t step in it.
